PM summons cabinet meeting today Posted: ISLAMABAD (Dunya News): Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has summoned an emergency meeting of the federal cabinet today (Monday).According to sources, the Prime Minister will be briefed by the Foreign Office officials in the meeting about prevailing internal security situation arising after the death of TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud in a US drone strike.Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will brief the cabinet about the prevailing internal security situation.The meeting will also assess the security concerns in the wake of death of Hakimullah Mehsud.The Prime Minister will also attend the parliament session and meet government and opposition leaders and will also take the Parliament into confidence regarding government stance on security concerns.Nawaz Sharif will also hold meeting with Army chief Ashfaq Pervez Kayani.

The meeting of the opposition parties will be held at the Parliament House today to adopt a joint strategy on the issue.

PTI will compel Centre to halt NATO supply: Hashmi Posted: ISLAMABAD (Online): President Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Javed Hashmi has said that PTI would force the federal government to support blockage of trucks carrying supplies of coalition forces into Afghanistan.Talking to journalists here on Sunday, Hashmi stated that his party has decided to cut NATO supply lines in the province.Earlier, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting and ruled out blocking of NATO supply lines by saying that blocking the supply of allied forces would not halt the drone strikes.According to reports, Prime Minister Sharif said that the federal government would continue to use diplomatic channels to end the predator strikes.

Taliban chief lived in US$120,000 farmhouse Posted: MIRANSHAH (AFP) - With marble floors, lush green lawns and a towering minaret, the US$120,000 farm where feared Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud died in a US drone strike was no grubby mountain cave.Mehsud spent his days skipping around Pakistans rugged tribal areas to avoid the attentions of US drones. It was the safest place for us before this strike, local shopkeeper Akhter Khan told AFP.This illusion of safety was shattered on Friday when a US drone fired at least two missiles at Mehsuds vehicle as it stood at the compound gate waiting to enter, killing the Pakistani Taliban chief and four cadres.The area around Dandey Darpakhel is known as a hub for the Haqqani network, a militant faction blamed for some of the most high-profile attacks in Afghanistan in recent years.Many left the area during the Talibans rule in Afghanistan, coming back after the US-led invasion following the 9/11 attacks.Samiullah Wazir, a shopkeeper in the area, told AFP he would regularly see a convoy of four or five SUVs with blacked-out windows leave the compound early in the morning and return after sunset.We thought that somebody very important must be living in this house, Wazir said.One day, I saw a man wearing a white shawl entering the house and I thought he looked like Hakimullah, but I thought How can he live here because he could be easily hit by a drone strike?But Hakimullah it was and on Friday he returned to his compound for the final time.We were closing the shop when his vehicle came and was about to enter the house when a missile struck it, Wazir said.

Kerry lands in Saudi to ease tension over Syria, Iran Posted: RIYADH (AFP) - Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Saudi Arabia Sunday hoping to repair ties with Americas longstanding ally, which have frayed over the Syrian conflict and US outreach to Iran.The top US diplomat was already on the second stop of an 11-day trip which has become an exercise in damage control, as the regional turbulence unleashed by the Arab Spring stirs tensions with longtime US partners.Saudi Arabia, locked in a decades-long rivalry with Iran, is concerned that proposed Syrian peace talks could leave a Tehran-backed regime in Damascus and that a breakthrough in nuclear negotiations could lead to a US rapprochement with Iran.The conservative oil-rich kingdom has grown increasingly nervous over the past two years as popular revolts have toppled onetime allies in Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen and spread turmoil across the region.In an unprecedented move last month, Saudi turned down a coveted non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in protest at the world bodys failure to end the war in Syria, which has left over 120,000 people dead.Earlier Sunday in Cairo, Kerry acknowledged that while there might be differences over tactics in ending the Syrian conflict, the end goal for the United States and its allies was the same -- a transition of power.Riyadh, one of the main backers of the Syrian opposition, was reportedly angered when US President Barack Obama last month put on hold threatened military strikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assads regime.While acknowledging that some countries wanted the United States to act differently on Syria, Kerry insisted that differences on individual tactics on policy do not mean a difference on (the) fundamental goal of the policy.We all share the same goal ... that is the salvation of the state of Syria and a transition government put in place ... that can give the people of Syria the opportunity to choose their future, Kerry said during a press conference with Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy.Kerry also said the US would stick with its friends as they navigate the turmoil unleashed by the Arab Spring, which has led to the rise of powerful new extremist groups in Libya and Syria.We will be there for Saudi Arabia, for the Emirates, for Qataris, for the Jordanians, for the Egyptians and others. Arab League to press Syria opposition over peace talks Posted: CAIRO (AFP) - Arab League foreign ministers gathered in Cairo on Sunday to push the Syrian opposition to attend the proposed Geneva II peace conference.Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi said in comments broadcast live on Egyptian state television that the extraordinary meeting of the ministers aimed to encourage the Syrian opposition to attend the Geneva II talks, which are backed by the United States and Russia.The minsters are asked today to provide all the support to the (opposition Syrian) National Coalition in order to encourage it to participate in Geneva II, Arabi said.Syrias opposition has refused to attend unless President Bashar al-Assads resignation is on the table -- a demand rejected by Damascus.Some rebel groups fighting the Syrian regime have also warned that participants would be considered traitors.Qatari Foreign Minister Khaled al-Attiyah welcomed the proposed talks, but appealed to his Arab League counterparts to reach a common position concerning the negotiation process so that the Syrian regime will not be given another chance to play with the blood of the Syrian people.UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has said that Geneva II would not be possible without the participation of the Syrian opposition.Brahimi met Assad on Wednesday and said the Syrian government had agreed to take part in the talks and that the opposition was trying to find a way to be represented.The Syrian National Coalition has said it plans to meet on November 9 to decide whether to attend, but the Syrian National Council, a key member of the bloc, has threatened to quit if it does so.Meanwhile, the head of the National Coalition, Ahmed al-Jarba, urged the League to take a clear decision on the delivery of weapons to the Syrian rebels, adding we are ready to provide all the guarantees that they would not fall into wrong hands.Several countries have expressed fears that jihadists have seized weapons intended for rebels fighting Assads forces.The Syrian conflict has killed more than 120,000 people since it broke out in March 2011, according to watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Solar eclipse sweeps Africa, Europe and US Posted: NAIROBI (AFP) - Africans were treated Sunday to a spectacular solar eclipse that swept across the continent, while sky-gazers in the United States and Europe also glimpsed the rare phenomenon.A total eclipse could be seen over parts of Africa and one of the best views was in northern Kenyas Sibiloi national park, where a few hundred tourists gathered on the edge of the desert lake Turkana.Alongside the tourists were colourfully dressed Kenyans from the Turkana, Rendile and Dasanach tribes, many draped in beads, who cheered as the sky darkened.But dramatic weather almost spoilt the show, with sandstorms, rain, a rainbow and heavy cloud all minutes before the eclipse, an AFP photographer said.Some tourists, fearing they would miss the sight, jetted off at the last minute, seeking a clearer spot on other side of lake.In the end the eclipse, which lasted about 10 seconds in Kenya, was partially obscured by cloud.Sky-gazers in Gabon, Congo, Uganda and Ethiopia were also treated to the total eclipse.I saw a black disc progressively cover the sun. Its magnificent, said Clarence Diledou, who lives of Gabons port town of Port-Gentil.But unfortunately the bad weather spoiled the party a bit.The west African nation got peak viewing of the total eclipse as it swept over a path nearly 60 kilometres (37 miles) wide.In Port-Gentil, families gathered together for the occasion along the sea front, facing the sun.Like many in the town, Diledou used special glasses distributed by authorities to watch the rare event.Those who did not have any came up with imaginative solutions, among them Pauline Koumba, who put a bowl of water in her courtyard and watched the reflected eclipse.I saw the brief passage of the eclipse in my bowl. But it was over quickly and the black clouds spoiled the effect, she said.Families also gathered in Gabons capital Libreville, where the eclipse was less spectacular, but where the skies darkened noticeably for about half an hour from 1330 GMT.In the eastern United States, viewers caught sight of a partial eclipse lasting 45 minutes close to sunrise.Partial views were also available in southern European countries Spain, Italy, Greece, and also in Iraq.The round shape of the Earth explains why viewers in Africa saw a total eclipse, while those in the United States and Europe only saw the sun partly obscured.Experts say a safe way to view an eclipse is by making a pinhole camera -- piercing a tiny hole in a piece of paper then turning your back to the sun and using the pierced page to project the image of the sun on another sheet of paper.

Israeli drone crashes inside Gaza Strip Posted: JERUSALEM (AP) - An unmanned Israeli surveillance aircraft crashed in the Gaza Strip on Sunday after experiencing a technical malfunction, the military said.The military said it was investigating what caused the Skylark drone to go down.Israel uses drones to gather intelligence on militant activity in Gaza. The territory is governed by the Hamas militant group, and several other armed groups also operate there.In a statement, Hamas said it had seized the aircraft. It gave no further details and did not provide any photos.The army would not say whether any secrets or technology had slipped into Hamas hands. Military officials though said the Skylark has safeguards to prevent disclosure of information to unauthorized personnel. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with security protocol.

Attack on Nigerian wedding convoy leaves 30 dead Posted: MAIDUGURI (AFP) - Gunmen have attacked a wedding convoy in Nigerias northeastern state of Borno, killing more than 30 people including the groom in a suspected ambush, witnesses and survivors said Sunday.The attack took place Saturday on the notorious Bama-Banki road when the wedding revellers, including friends and relatives of the groom, were returning to the state capital Maiduguri after the ceremony in Michika, in nearby Adamawa State, they said.It was a gory scene, said Kyari Buba, a driver, adding that he had seen more than 30 dead bodies on the side of the road following the attack.I was in the middle of the convoy when the gunmen attacked and I was able to stop the vehicle in time to open the door and run into the bush along with the people I was with, he said.When we returned long after the gunmen were gone we met a gory scene with more than 30 people shot dead or slaughtered, he told AFP.All the victims were brutally murdered by the attackers, he said, describing his shock at the sight of the bodies.A survivor and friend of the groom, Japhet Haruna, 36, recounted his escape from the assailants.I wonder how I and few other people survived the onslaught because it was well coordinated. I was in the fifth vehicle in the convoy and when I realised that the attackers were out to kill, I ran into the bush, he said.I believe it is God that saved me and (a) few others from their bullets. They targeted everybody in the convoy -- Muslims, Christians and children, said Haruna, adding that the escape was miraculous.Haruna said there were about 50 people in the convoy and that he suspected Boko Haram for the attack.The fate of the bride and her family members was still unknown.An army spokesman in the region said in a statement late Sunday: The report received from our troops indicated that some terrorists attacked a bus at Bulakuri village and killed five persons.The bodies were taken to Bama, Captain Muhammad Dole added in the statement.Violent attacks are not uncommon in northeastern Nigeria, where the army launched an offensive in May to end a deadly insurgency by Boko Haram Islamists.Boko Haram has said it is fighting to create an Islamic state but the group is believed to be made up of different factions with varying aims.A string of attacks in recent months has cast doubt on the success of the militarys campaign. Some of the violence has targeted vigilante groups which have formed to help the military.

Djokovic beats Ferrer in Paris Masters final Posted: PARIS (AP) - Novak Djokovic won the last four games in each set to beat defending champion David Ferrer 7-5, 7-5 Sunday in the final of the Paris Masters.The second-seeded Serb won his 17th straight match to capture his sixth title this season and the 40th of his career.Summer was up and down, Djokovic said, and now again Im playing on a very high level and have lots of confidence in myself, in my game. Everton, Spurs draw 0-0 in Premier League Posted: LIVERPOOL (AP) - Everton and Tottenham missed a chance to go second in the Premier League by drawing 0-0 in a match that failed to live up to expectations at Goodison Park on Sunday.Spurs dominated the first half but failed to seriously test Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made comfortable saves from Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend.The home side came back into it after the break, with striker Romelu Lukaku going close with a diving header, but Spurs kept a seventh clean sheet in 10 league matches.With Chelsea and Liverpool both losing on Saturday, a win would have pushed either team up to second place behind Arsenal. Athletics: Mutai, Jeptoo win New York Marathon titles Posted: NEW YORK CITY (AFP) - Kenyans Geoffrey Mutai and Priscah Jeptoo won New York City Marathon titles Sunday as elite runners returned to the Big Apple a year after Hurricane Sandy wiped out the race and seven months after the Boston Marathon bombings.Mutai, who also won the 2011 New York crown, captured the mens title in an unofficial time of 2hrs 8mins, 23secs while Jeptoo, the reigning London Marathon champion who finished second at last years London Olympics, came from behind to win in an unofficial time of 2:25.07.The 43rd edition of the 26.2-mile (42.2km) showdown included more than 48,000 runners from 115 nations competing in cool and windy conditions for a $100,000 top prize with a backdrop of tightened security in the wake of twin tragedies.Three people were killed by bombs planted near the finish line of the Boston Marathon last April, making Boston Strong a catchphrase to inspire comebacks, including a World Series baseball crown for a Boston Red Sox club that was last in its division in 2012.What occurred in Boston has made this race even more important to participants, said retired tennis star John McEnroe, who lives near the finish line.Nearly 100 people died in flooding and devastating property damage caused in the New York area last year by Hurricane Sandy, which forced the race to be cancelled.We run for the spirit of New York and Boston, said race chief executive Mary Wittenberg. Squash: Matthew wins third world title Posted: MANCHESTER (AFP) - Nick Matthew won the World Championship for the third time in four years when he inflicted yet another near miss on Gregory Gaultier by 11-9, 11-9, 11-13, 7-11, 11-2.It was the fourth time the Frenchman had lost in a world final, as he sought to emulate the 2004 achievement of Thierry Lincou, the only Frenchman to have won the world title so far.For Matthew, aged 33, it was a wonderful reward for longevity and persistence, as he is only a few weeks younger than Geoff Hunt, the Australian who became the oldest male world champion when he won his last world title in 1980.I never thought I would see an English crowd as partisan as the French but tonight they were, Matthew said. They really pushed me on.I want to say to Greg -- hes younger than me (30) and his time will come.Gaultier pronounced himself very, very disappointed.He added: I really thought I would win this time and it is very hard to take.It had nevertheless looked as though the prize might be slipping away from the fourth seeded Yorkshireman when Gaultier first saved a match point at 11-10 in the third game and then erupted into his creative best in the fourth.Then when it seemed the world number two would push through to become only the third man to win the world title from two games down, he began to struggle with cramp in the fourth game.Although Gaultier somehow battled through to a decider his movement was almost gone, and Matthew trampled through the fifth game in only seven minutes, with Gaultier unable to chase down the last few balls at all.Gaultier will now be ruing a schedule which put him on last thing the evening every time, making it impossible to get to sleep before 3 am.This was followed by Matthew getting the briefest of semi-finals on Saturday when defending champion Ramy Ashour retired through injury.It was nevertheless a marvellous achievement by the resourceful and disciplined Matthew who acknowledged that Gaultier and Ashour were better than him most of the year, yet still came out on top when it most mattered.It was one of the most dramatic of all the 35 finals, with startling incident after startling incident, and the balance of advantage making many great pendulum swings.Gaultier led 9-6 in the first game and 8-6 in the second, lost both leads as Matthew raised his game, and then lost both games on penalty points as backhand drives rebounded at crazy angles off the front wall too close to his body.He then got lucky with a Matthew lob which was called out when it was clearly in, which gave him a 8-7 lead in the third game, and saved the match point with an outrageous backhand volley into the nick -- the join of the sidewall and the floor -- and rolled dead.There was also an incredible dive by Gaultier which saw him hit the ball while on the floor and win the point, and a recovery from Matthew after Gaultiers head had accidentally connected with his face.The denouement came with Gaultier painfully unable to capitalise on his great comeback and Matthew exulting with a rapturous crowd.I dread to think of the place Gregs in now -- I feel sorry for him, Matthew said. But for me -- I cant imagine anything better than this.

Kerry heads to Middle East to shore up key Arab ties Posted: WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry headed to the Middle East Saturday, aiming to shore up decades-old alliances with Egypt and Saudi Arabia left badly frayed by the turbulence sweeping the region.Egyptian state media said the top diplomat would visit Cairo Sunday for the first time since Washington froze part of its $1.5 billion in annual aid, angered by the bloodshed and lack of democratic progress since the July ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.The Cairo stop was not immediately confirmed by US officials.It would come just a day before Islamist leader Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president, is due to go on trial on charges of inciting the murder of protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012.Clashes and unrest between supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and military security forces have left about 1,000 dead since he was overthrown by the army on July 3.The US administration has openly voiced concern at the lack of visible progress by the interim military-led leadership toward restoring democracy and holding fresh presidential and parliamentary elections.Washington announced in early October that it was recalibrating its aid to Egypt, which includes about $1.3 billion for military assistance.It also said it was suspending the delivery of big-ticket items such as Apache helicopters, F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 Abrams tank parts and Harpoon missiles until it sees some progress on democratic reforms.If Kerry's Cairo trip goes ahead, the timing is somewhat awkward, with Morsi's trial likely to inflame further protests by his Islamist backers. A huge security net is being thrown over the southern part of the city, with some 20,000 police being deployed to guard the police academy where proceedings against Morsi and 14 other defendants will take place.US officials have repeatedly called for Morsi's release and for an end to any politically motivated trials.But Egypt's official MENA news agency said Friday that Kerry would only stay in Cairo for several hours.US officials, meanwhile, say he will arrive in Saudi Arabia some time on Sunday, where he also faces tough talks with the kingdom's leaders, including King Abdullah.Kerry's 17th trip since becoming secretary of state in February will also take him to Poland, Israel, Bethlehem, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Morocco, and he is due to return to Washington on November 12.Along with its concerns over the hesitant US policy towards the bloody conflict in Syria and Washington's outreach to arch foe Iran, Saudi Arabia has been dismayed by the freezing of US aid to Egypt, seen as a cornerstone of regional stability.The Gulf kingdom had considered Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood a threat and had quickly pledged financial aid to Egypt's new military-installed authorities congratulating interim Egyptian president Adly Mansour after he was appointed in July and unveiling a $5 billion aid package.The dragging war in Syria, now in its 31st month, is also one of the major bones of contention straining ties between Washington and Riyadh, a staunch supporter of the Syrian opposition rebels fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.In an unprecedented move, Riyadh earlier this month turned down a coveted non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in protest at the world body's failure to end the war that has left over 115,000 dead.Saudi intelligence chief Prince Bandar bin Sultan al-Saud also reportedly told diplomats last month that he would scale back Saudi cooperation with the CIA on training Syrian rebels, and work with other allies including Jordan and France.State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki praised Riyadh this week as an enormously important partner on all issues including Iran, as Western powers seek to rein in its suspect nuclear program, and said that if there were concerns among allies, Kerry believed in the power of face-to-face talks.The secretary, overall, believes that rolling up his sleeves and having personal diplomacy is the way that we should continue to approach either issues we work together on, global challenges, or issues where there may be concerns, Psaki said.

Syrian opposition leader meets Arab League chief Posted: CAIRO (AP) - Top officials from the main Syrian opposition group discussed Saturday with the head of the Arab League a proposed peace conference to end the country's civil war.The talks in Cairo came a day before foreign ministers from the League's member states were to meet to discuss the 2 ½-year crisis and the peace talks expected to take place later this month.The meeting between leaders of the Syrian National Coalition and Nabil Elaraby came as U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi voiced uncertainty about the proposed Geneva peace conference scheduled for late November.Senior coalition official Burhan Ghalioun denied after the talks that the group is under pressure from the League to participate in the Geneva conference.The Syrian opposition is made up of different factions, many of them politicians based in exile the majority of whom are part of the coalition, the main umbrella group. The coalition is demanding President Bashar Assad to step down.Haitham al-Maleh, another coalition official, said the demands of the opposition will be announced during the Arab foreign ministers meeting Sunday. The basics, he said, include an end to government aerial bombardment, releasing political prisoners and ending the siege of some rebel-held.The opposition can't go to Geneva while the Syrians are being killed and slaughtered, he added.In Syria, state-run news agency SANA said Saturday troops killed Abu Mohammad al-Yamani, a local leader of the al-Qaida offshoot the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant in the village of Salma in the coastal province of Latakia. SANA added that tens of gunmen were killed with him.SANA also reported that 10 people were killed and several others wounded when a car, which terrorists rigged with explosives blew up in the Damascus suburb of Yabroud.In neighboring Lebanon, gunmen stopped a minibus in a Sunni neighborhood in the northern city of Tripoli and shot six men in their legs, the state-run National News Agency reported. The pro-Assad Arab Democratic Party said in a statement that the men were from the city's predominantly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen.Videos aired on local TV stations showed at least four men lying on the ground with the legs bloodied while being surrounded by dozens of men.Tripoli has witnessed intense clashes between pro and anti-Assad groups that left scores of people dead in the past months. Lebanese are deeply divided over Syria's civil war.More than 120,000 people have been killed so far in the war, now in its third year, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which closely monitors the war through a network of activists in the country. The U.N. said in July that 100,000 Syrians have been killed, and has not updated that figure since. Millions of Syrians have fled their homes because of the fighting.

US, Germany to ink no-spy deal: report Posted: BERLIN (AFP) - Germany and the United States are to strike a two-way deal not to spy on each other in the wake of the diplomatic furore sparked by the Edward Snowden revelations, a German newspaper reported.A delegation of German chancellery and intelligence officials reached the deal during talks at the White House this week, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) reported in its Sunday edition.The accord is set to be concluded early next year, it said, citing sources close to the German government.Contacted by AFP, a government spokeswoman declined to comment.Separately, German weekly Der Spiegel also reported that a deal between the two sides was being discussed.In a report to be published Sunday, the weekly said Germany and the United States have agreed to not carry out industrial espionage on each other.Der Spiegel also said that Keith Alexander, the director of the National Security Agency, had acknowledged the tapping of Merkel's mobile phone in the past.During a meeting with Democrat senator Dianne Feinstein, Alexander had been asked if Washington was listening in to Merkel's calls. 17 killed in Nigerian church stampede: officials Posted: LAGOS (AFP) - Seventeen people were killed and dozens of others injured on Saturday in a stampede following the end of an overnight church vigil in eastern Nigeria, a government spokesman said.We have visited the hospital in Nkpor and found 17 corpses that were brought in from the scene of the disaster, spokesman Mike Udah told AFP. Local media reports claimed the death toll could be higher, claiming that up to 28 people had been killed in the stampede at St Dominic's Catholic Church.There was no immediate known cause for the stampede which happened in the grounds of the church as followers celebrated an overnight vigil to mark All Saints' Day.The tragedy happened at 6am (0500 GMT). Hours earlier the event had been attended by the local Anambra state governor, Peter Obi. He later returned to the scene of the tragedy and visited the injured in hospital, promising to set up an inquiry to establish the cause of the tragedy.

6.4 magnitude quake strikes off Tonga Posted: SYDNEY (AFP) - A shallow 6.4-magnitude quake struck off the Pacific nation of Tonga early Sunday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.The quake hit 345 kilometres (213 miles) northeast of the capital Nukualofa at a depth of 10 kilometres.The USGS PAGER (Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response) issued a green alert level projecting a very low risk of casualties or economic losses.The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a tsunami after the quake, which was followed by a 5.4-magnitude aftershock.Tonga, almost 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) northeast of New Zealand, lies on the so-called Ring of Fire, where continental plates collide causing frequent seismic activity.

Injured McCullum out of Bangladesh series Posted: WELLINGTON (AFP) - A back injury has forced New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum out of the remaining two matches of the Bangladesh tour, officials said Sunday, adding that he will return home immediately.McCullum had a scan and the decision is that he return to New Zealand immediately for further review and to begin rehabilitation, New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.He was initially scheduled to fly home after the Bangladesh tour, missing the subsequent limited-overs series in Sri Lanka.But team physiotherapist Paul Close said: Brendon's back needs careful management. It's flared up and is giving him significant pain. Ferrer stuns Nadal, faces Djokovic in Paris final Posted: PARIS (AFP) - Defending champion David Ferrer upset compatriot and world number one Rafael Nadal on Saturday to reach the Paris Masters final where he will meet Novak Djokovic who eliminated Roger Federer.Ferrer, 31, who won his only Masters title last year in the French capital, dominated his fellow Spaniard 6-3, 7-5 to set up the championship decider against Djokovic who came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against the 2011 Paris champion. No player has successfully defended the Paris title after previous winners Boris Becker, Guy Forget, Pete Sampras and David Nalbandian all failed after reaching a second straight final. Nadal hit an uncharacteristic 25 unforced errors and converted just one break point in seven attempts as Ferrer defeated his rival for only the fifth time in 21 meetings. I'm a little bit injured in my leg but I'm very happy I was able to win. Vinci rallied from 5-2 down in the second set and saved four match points to win 5-7, 7-5, 8-6 in 3 hours, 13 minutes.It was an incredible match, was a tough match, Vinci said. At the end I had a little bit of cramp but I won a great match. There was a lot of ups and downs and I tried to stay focused on every single point. It wasn't easy.At the end she got a little bit tired. It was her first time (in Fed Cup) so probably there was a bit of nerves. I won and I'm happy. I had a great season but I think this is a fantastic win. The ATP Finals in London are his last chance to compensate somewhat for a feeble season.I still have another week where I have to give it all. After, it will be long holidays, Federer said after losing to Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in their first meeting this year in the Paris Masters semifinals on Saturday.The pair was placed in the same group at the season-ending, eight-man finals, which start on Monday.Djokovic, who won his 16th straight match in Paris against Federer, is the defending champion in London, where he beat Federer in the final last year. Djokovic also won the title in 2008, while Federer has won it a record six times.Federer and Djokovic, who faced off for the 30th time, will be playing in a tough Group B that also includes the in-form Juan Martin del Potro and Richard Gasquet.Federer said he will focus on his recovery ahead of Tuesday's match against Djokovic.I'm always excited about those challenges, said Federer, who will be competing for the 12th straight year in the ATP Finals. Arsenal clear at top with 2-0 win over Liverpool Posted: LONDON (AP) - For many observers, Arsenal needed to beat a major rival to prove its worthiness as a title contender in the English Premier League. The team responded with a thrilling performance and two superb individual goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, beating Liverpool 2-0 and moving five points clear at the top of the table on Saturday.Cazorla's goal to open the scoring was a symbol of Arsenal's determination and resolve to prove their critics wrong. Mikel Arteta released Bacary Sagna down the right in the 19th minute and the full back's excellent cross was headed firmly onto the post by Cazorla. The Spanish midfielder didn't give up, collecting the rebound and volleying into the upper left corner.Arsenal sealed the victory in the 59th when Ramsey received a clipped pass from Mesut Ozil, dribbled forward and patiently waited for the ball to bounce up in front of him before unleashing a thunderous shot that dipped over the outstretched hand of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.It was an important win for the team, for the club, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. I don't think anyone will dispute we deserved to win today.The match was a big test for Arsenal because critics believed the team moved to the league summit against relatively easy opposition. Mark Webber takes pole position at Abu Dhabi GP Posted: ABU DHABI (AP) - Mark Webber managed to outshine his Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel, beating the four-time world champion's time right at the end of qualifying to take pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday.The Australian is competing in his final season in Formula One and still looking for his first win this year. He will look to end Vettel's run of six straight race wins on Sunday.Webber, who is fifth in the championship, earned his second pole from the past three races and 13th of his career.Good day, Webber said, who clocked 1 minute, 39.957 seconds. Vettel timed 1:40.075.It was a good lap on a track that, in the past, hasn't been super invigorating for me in terms of layout but we certainly enjoyed qualifying today. I knew I had to work on certain sections of the track which Sebastian had already been doing a good job there, so I needed to match him and keep the areas where I was still doing well.Vettel, who already has his fourth straight F1 title, took pole in four of the past five races.I did what I could today but it wasn't enough. That's why I apologized to the team. I messed up a bit on turn 1, it's a tricky corner, Vettel said. Squash: Matthew, Gaultier make World Championships final Posted: MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ramy Ashour lost his world title and saw his unbeaten 53-match sequence halted when a calf injury caused him to retire at one game all against Nick Matthew in the semi-finals of the World Championships on Saturday.The sport's most brilliant player and most charismatic personality was reduced to a sombre figure, close to tears, at having dreams of repeating his world title triumph in Manchester five years ago shattered.Instead it became the third time in four world championships that the world number one from Egypt has been forced to quit in the middle of the tournament, raising questions as to what the 26-year-old can do to prolong his career.After two painfully half-hearted rallies at the start of the third game, Ashour shook hands and received some consoling words from Matthew who made it to his third final in four years with the score at 6-11, 11-2, 2-0 in his favour.In Sunday's final, Matthew will face French second seed Gregory Gaultier who defeated Mohamed El Shorbagy, the Egyptian sixth seed, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8, 12-10.Ashour confirmed that he suffered the injury during his hard third round match with Cameron Pilley of Australia, which went to four games and lasted more than an hour.I've been having a lot of physio, and ice and acupuncture - and taking pills to relax, he said.It's going to be hard because I have been pushing my leg far too much and that's not the right way to do it.I've been expecting something wrong to happen but I've been trying to stay positive. Prior's difficulties continue Down Under Posted: PERTH (AP) - England wicketkeeper Matt Prior is remaining upbeat despite poor recent form that has continued early in his side's Ashes tour of Australia.Prior is under pressure to perform after scoring just 133 runs at an average of 19 during England's 3-0 home Ashes triumph this year.Things haven't started well for Prior, who was dismissed for 4 on a good batting pitch in England's drawn three-day match against a second-string WACA Chairman's XI which ended on Saturday.England has two more warm-up games before the first test against Australia in Brisbane, starting Nov. 21.Prior, who also dropped a catch in Perth, said he's not concerned about his recent lack of runs because his net sessions have been excellent.If I scored runs in the nets I reckon I would probably have one hundred 100s at the moment, Prior said. I've been hitting it brilliantly, moving well, and feeling really good. India beat Australia to clinch ODI series 3-2 Posted: BANGALORE (Agencies) - Rohit Sharma smashed his way into the record books with a stunning 209 as the Indian cricket team provided the perfect Diwali gift to the nation with a 57-run victory in the the series-deciding final ODI against Australia to clinch the rubber 3-2 here tonight.The 26-year-old Sharma gave a breathtaking display to power India to an imposing 383 for six before the hosts bowled out Australia for 326 in 45.1 overs at the jam-packerd Chinnaswamy Stadium.The immensely talented Sharma thus became only the third batsman in the history of ODI cricket after Virender Sehwag (219) and Sachin Tendulkar (200 no) to reach the coveted double ton.Chasing a mammoth total, Australia made a spirited effort with all-rounder James Faulkner blasting a 73-ball 116, the fastest century by an Australian in ODIs. While Faulkner hit 11 fours and six over-boundaries, Glenn Maxwell pulverized the Indian bowlers on his way to a 22-ball 60 that contained seven sixes.Staring at a heavy defeat at 138 for six, Faulkner played a blinder as Australia made a dramatic recovery to give their chase respectability. Initiated in 1975, Shirkat Gah (SG) is a leading women's rights organization that operates out of offices in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar. SG strengthens women as rights-holders, building women's capacity to fully exercise rights, make informed choices and be included in decision-making processes. An advocate of the ICPD agenda and the Human Rights Council's Resolution on maternal mortality as a human rights issue, Shirkat Gah's human rights based approach locates marginalized women and vulnerable groups at the centre of the health system.

In its bid to improve women's access to health services and ability to improve accountability and governance of the health system at a local level, SG is initiating a four year National Action Research Study that will run across the four provinces. The study aims to enhance the linkages between the community and the district health administration.

In this regard SG is seeking applications for two positions based in Karachi:

Role and Responsibilities

 

o   Carry out the research component of the project, in terms of: literature reviews, field-data analysis, and report writing including a district level assessment of mechanisms for monitoring the Health System Governance

o   Plan and carry out Rapid Situational Analysis at the project sites and prepare a report focused on recommendations at the interventional stage

o   Coordinate and participate in the regular field visits as well as prepare feedback reports with conclusions and recommendations.

o   Liaise with the Expert Resource Group for the project and follow up

o   Assist in selecting indicators for monitoring and evaluating implementation progress, outputs and outcomes of the study.

o   Assist in developing guidelines, tools and reporting forms for monitoring of project implementation.

o   Develop Research tools and Capacity building manuals

o   Plan, arrange and carry out Capacity building Trainings of the CBOs and the Duty bearers with the support of the project team

o   Co-author peer reviewed journal articles

Desired qualifications and Qualities:

Masters in Health Policy, Public Health, Health Management Systems , Social Sciences or related degree

Experience: 4 years in Health Research or Health Systems Management Programs/ Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights /Women's Health

Must have experience of Monitoring and Evaluation frameworks

Must have knowledge of gender dimensions of health and the feminist ideology

Must be prepared to visit the project sites

Good networking skills to develop technical relationships at district and provincial level with the line departments and institutions active in health service development

Good knowledge of English, computer skills and experience in MS Office Excel and Word;

Ability and/or willingness to write scholarly papers

*Experience in Qualitative research will be an asset
