Junaid's five keeps Pakistan high in First Test

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Paceman Junaid Khan grabbed five wickets and Bilawal Bhatti finished with three as Pakistan enjoyed the better of the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.Junaid claimed his fourth five-wicket haul, taking figures of 5-58, while Bhatti took 3-65 in his first Test as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 204 after Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and opted to bowl first on a greenish Sheikh Zayed Stadium pitch.By the close on the opening day Pakistan reached 46-1 with debutant opener Ahmed Shehzad not out on 25. Fellow opener Khurram Manzoor ran himself out after making 21, leaving Pakistan trailing by 158 runs but with nine first-innings wickets remaining.Amidst the collapse in the Sri Lankan innings, skipper Angelo Mathews stood out, defying the Pakistan attack for 160 minutes for his 91.He added an invaluable 61 for the ninth wicket with Shaminda Eranga (14) to lift Sri Lanka from a precarious 124-8.Mathews hit 15 boundaries during his fighting knock, improving on his previous best of 64 not out against Pakistan at Colombo in 2009 before he was the last man out, stumped off Saeed Ajmal, who finished with 2-32.Junaid said the pitch needed bowlers to keep line and length. It's a good pitch and if you bowl line and length then you get success, said Junaid, who now has 47 wickets in his 14 Tests.I have improved a lot after getting good tips from legends like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and our bowling coach Mohammad Akram.Misbah-ul-Haq's decision to field first had looked unwise as Sri Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne (38) and Kaushal Silva (20) gave their team a sound start, putting on 57 for the first wicket. But, from 66-1, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for the addition of 101 runs in the afternoon session.Bhatti, making his Test debut, took three wickets off just eight balls after lunch. He had Silva caught at slip off the fourth ball after the resumption and then had the experienced Mahela Jayawardene (5) caught behind in his next over.A ball earlier, Jayawardene had been caught behind only to see the umpire call it a no-ball.Two balls later, Bhatti had Dinesh Chandimal caught in the slip by Mohammad Hafeez for a duck to leave Sri Lanka struggling at 76-4.It was left to Junaid to do the rest. The left-armer dismissed Sri Lanka's most reliable batsman, Kumar Sangakkara, caught off an uppish drive at point for 16, and had both Prasanna Jayawardene (5) and Sachitra Senanayake (5) caught behind. He then bowled Rangana Herath for a duck to complete his fourth five-wicket haul -- all four have come against Sri Lanka. It was a different story in the first session, however.Karunaratne hit three boundaries in the first three overs, and five in all, before he miscued a drive off Junaid and was smartly snapped up at gully by Asad Shafiq.Pakistan strove hard for wickets in the first hour and wasted one review when they appealed for a catch behind against Silva off Junaid. Replays showed the batsman had not touched the ball.Pakistan also gave a Test debut to Shehzad after he had played 40 one-day internationals in the last four years, while spinner Senanayake was given his Test debut for Sri Lanka. The second Test will be played in Dubai (January 8-12) and the third in Sharjah (January 16-20).

Fireworks and fear as Latvia joins eurozone

Posted:

RIGA (AFP) - Just after the stroke of midnight, Latvia's prime minister will be one of the first to withdraw euros from a bank machine as fireworks explode overhead to celebrate the New Year and the country's entry into the troubled eurozone. But while many will cheer the 18th addition to the bloc, Latvians remain concerned about joining a currency union that has seen five of its members forced into painful bailouts since a crippling crisis erupted in 2009.According to a recent SKDS poll, half the nation expressed fear and annoyance at Latvia's third currency change in just over two decades, fearing price hikes and infuriated by the draconian austerity cuts made to get it into the club.Let's just get it over with. I'm tired of hearing about the euro 24 hours a day, said 24-year-old student Dace Jaunkalna.Like the crisis-hit eurozone, which expects to limp back to growth some time in 2014, the ex-Soviet republic of two million people took a beating during the 2008-2009 financial crisis. It suffered the world's deepest recession when GDP shrank by nearly 25 percent over the two years.Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis -- who has deftly steered Latvia towards the euro -- orchestrated a 7.5 billion-euro ($10.3-billion) international bailout to avert bankruptcy but at the price of deep austerity cuts.Known as the Baltic Tiger for its explosive growth after winning independence, Latvia has bounced back well. It topped growth in the EU in both 2011 and 2012 and is set to expand four percent in 2013.Latvia is a role model as far as fiscal adjustment is concerned, European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi told AFP. And European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso praised the country's impressive efforts and unwavering determination, as he welcomed the newest member to the club. The addition of Latvia to the bloc comes as the eurozone ends 2013 on a more positive note following years of lurching from crisis to crisis, enduring recession, unemployment and social unrest.Earlier Tuesday, Spain officially exited its bank bailout programme, a day after Greece's prime minister announced it was ready to return to the markets.Ireland has also put its bailout programme behind it and EU leaders stitched together an historic banking union deal in December they hope will end the excesses that brought the bloc to its knees.'I'll really miss the lat'However, despite some signs of light emerging in the eurozone, many in Latvia are wary of giving up their beloved lat, seen as a symbol of independence after nearly half a century of Soviet domination ended in 1990.The vocal No Euro casts the European Union as a successor to the USSR, charges that joining the eurozone will allow others to rule our economy and attacks Riga for lying about the benefits that the eurozone will bring.Everyone expects prices will go up in January, Leonora Timofejeva, a 56-year-old who earns the minimum wage of 200 lats (284 euros) per month tending graves in a village north of the capital Riga, told AFP.But pensioner Maiga Majore felt joining the euro bloc can only be a good thing. To be part of a huge European market is important. All this talk about price rises is just alarmist, she said. Both lati and euros will be legal tender for the first 14 days of the new year before the lat disappears from Latvians' pockets and wallets for good, causing a pang of nostalgia for some.Overall it's probably a good thing but I must confess that I'll really miss the lat, designer Agra Apele, home in Riga for the holidays from euro-member Finland, told AFP.Other countries currently inside the EU but outside the eurozone are biding their time.Only Denmark and Britain have a formal opt-out from joining the euro. Sweden rejected it in a 2003 referendum and is unlikely to join soon.Latvia's neighbour Lithuania has targeted 2015 as a possible joining date while larger economies Poland and the Czech Republic are still several years off meeting the strict membership criteria.More recent recruits to the EU, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary and Romania are even less likely to join the common currency any time soon.

A third of Americans don't believe in evolution

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - One third of Americans utterly reject the theory of evolution and believe instead that humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time, a new survey has found.About a quarter of Americans believe that evolution was guided by God while only 32 percent of those surveyed believe that evolution is due to natural processes such as natural selection, the Pew Research Center found. The broad results were little changed from a similar survey in 2009, but Pew found a drastically widening gap along party lines. Some 54 percent of Republicans and 64 percent of Democrats said they believed in evolution in 2009.That ten-point gap more than doubled in the latest survey, which found that only 43 percent of Republicans believe in evolution while 67 percent of Democrats said humans have evolved over time. The views of political independents were essentially unchanged, with 65 percent believing in evolution.Evolution has long been a political issue in the United States, where science classes are a battleground between advocates of non-religious teachings in public schools and conservative Christians who push for curriculum that includes creationism or intelligent design. The debate has heated up in recent years as the so-called culture wars have reignited amid a deepening partisan divide.Differences in the racial, ethnic and religious composition of the Democrats and Republicans surveyed do not wholly explain partisan differences in beliefs about evolution, Pew said.Indeed, the partisan differences remain even when taking these other characteristics into account, the non-partisan research group said. However, it did find strong differences among religious groups. Two thirds of white evangelical Protestants believe God created humans in their present form while 78 percent of white mainline Protestants believe in evolution. Half of black Protestants believe God devised humans as they exist today.Nearly seven in ten white non-Hispanic Catholics and 53 percent of Hispanic Catholics believe in evolution.Meanwhile, three out of four religiously unaffiliated respondents believe in evolution and just 13 percent of them believe evolution was guided by a supreme being. The results released Monday were drawn from a telephone survey of 1,983 adults conducted March 21 through April 8 that has a margin of error of three percent.

Treason case: Musharraf to be indicted today

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News/Agencies) - Former President Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf will appear before a special court (Wednesday) today in high treason case. The three-judge special court constituted to try former president Pervez Musharraf had decided last week to indict him on January 1."On January 1 the court will read out the statement of charges against the accused," said Justice Faisal Arab of the Sindh High Court who presided over the proceedings in the National Library Auditorium, Islamabad.Other members of the court are Justice Yawar Ali of the Lahore High Court and Justice Tahira Safdar of the Balochistan High Court. After framing the charges the court will summon witnesses and evidence from the prosecution.Last time, the court exempted the former military ruler from appearing after his counsel Anwar Mansoor Khan informed the special court that security personnel had found five kilograms of explosives and a pistol in a shopping bag near the residence of Gen Musharraf. The special court directed the federal government to submit its reply by January 1.During today's hearing, the court will take up both the matters -- indictment of Gen Musharraf and the petitions.Meanwhile in another attempt, Pervez Musharraf Tuesday filed an intra-court appeal against the special court constituted to try him for treason. The petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan's decision who had rejected all three pleas by Musharraf against the special court formed to try him for treason. It also urged the court to restrict the special court from functioning and stated that Musharraf should also get a chance of fair trial. Therefore, the trial should be carried out in a military court. The petitioner alleged that the constitution of a special court is the combined conspiracy by the prime minister and former chief justice of Pakistan, hence, it should not be allowed to work.It may be mentioned that Musharraf had raised objections over the appointment of judges and prosecutor in the special court. The ex-military strongman faces treason charges under Article 6 for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts. On the other hand, the overseas legal counsel team of Pervez Musharraf has arrived in Pakistan. It is expected that the team would appear before a special court on behalf of Pervez Musharraf in his high treason case. The members of the legal team of Musharraf are belonged to eleven countries including Britain, Sweden, Denmark and United States of America.

India capital's new CM halves electricity tariff

NEW DELHI (AFP) - As a new years gift to the Indian capital, its new chief minister announced Tuesday the government will slash power costs by half, fulfilling another top campaign pledge a day after he promised a free supply of water. The Aam Aadmi (common man) Party chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, who missed his first day in the office Monday due to an upset stomach, chaired a cabinet meeting Tuesday to announce electricity rates would be halved starting January 1, 2014 till March 31, 2014.The subsidy will apply to those consuming less than 400 units of power and help 280,000 consumers in Delhi, Kejriwal told a late Tuesday press conference.Kejriwal has asked the national auditor to review alleged financial irregularities by private power distribution companies by March end, after which the cabinet would take a fresh call on the power rates.Only two days into his job, the anti-corruption champion implemented two key campaign promises to slash power costs and supply free water. Not only that, but he also stuck to his word on greater transparency on Monday when he tweeted freely about the Delhi belly that had spoiled his first day.Twitter was abuzz when Kejriwal tweeted about his severe loose motions, overshadowing his achievement in supplying nearly 700 litres of water per day to consumers in a city of some 16 million.Critics have said giving out free water will encourage wastefulness in a country where water is in short supply.Kejriwal, whose pledge to fight for Indias common man won over voters in New Delhi state polls, had been set to start governing the capital on Monday after being sworn in at the weekend. The Aam Aadmi party, which was born out of an anti-corruption mass movement two years ago, is leading the Delhi government with outside support from the Congress party, which rules nationally but was pushed to a distant third place in the Delhi elections.

Euro slips but still up versus dollar for 2013

Posted:

LONDON (Reuters) - The euro eased back on Tuesday but was still on track to be the worlds best-performing major currency this year, while the dollar was set for its biggest annual gain against the yen since 1979.The single currency has gained 26 percent against the yen this year, though it fell 0.4 percent to 144.60 yen on Tuesday, having set a five-year high of 145.67 yen on Friday.Against the dollar the euro has gained more than 4 percent, baffling many hedge funds who had expected a weak euro zone economy and a reduction in Federal Reserve bond-buying to strengthen the greenback this year. The Fed, however, finally announced its first move earlier this month and a steady reduction in the flood of dollars it is pumping into the economy looks set to contrast starkly with the Bank of Japan next year.We think things are going to be very data-dependent, said Paul Chappell, CIO of UK-based hedge fund manager C-View.At the moment that looks like U.S. numbers are going to be relatively robust compared with some other G7 peers, so the dollar is likely to be relatively robust versus other developed country currencies. He said the euro, boosted recently by banks in the region repatriating funds to shore up their capital bases, tends to lose ground in the first few days of a new year.On Tuesday the euro was 0.2 percent down at $1.3775 as the gap between U.S. two-year government bond yields and German yields widened, increasing the relative attractiveness of the dollar. The dollar slipped 0.2 percent to 104.96 yen, but was up 21 percent for 2013, its biggest annual gain since a 23.7 percent rise in 1979, according to Thomson Reuters data.Satoshi Okagawa, senior global markets analyst for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation in Singapore, saw the dollar rising to 110 yen in the first half of 2013, before retreating below 100 yen mid-year and then re-testing 110 yen in late 2014.The Swiss franc hovered near a three-decade peak against the yen, fetching 117.90 yen.The franc touched 119.17 yen on Friday, its highest since January 1983.C-Views Chappell added: Were very much into year-end where individual currencies are flopping around a bit, predicated on year-end flows.

Israel freed 26 Palestinian prisoners ahead of Kerry visit

Posted:

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel freed 26 Palestinian prisoners Tuesday as part of US-brokered peace talks ahead of Secretary of State John Kerrys latest visit to the region. The release prompted elation among Palestinians, who welcomed the prisoners back into the West Bank and Gaza Strip after they had spent two to three decades in Israeli jails. But as Kerry geared up for his 10th visit since March, an anticipated announcement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus government of further settlement construction -- designed to appease hardliners -- looked set again to undermine the talks.Kerry, expected to arrive Wednesday, has been pressing the two sides to agree on a framework for a final peace agreement ahead of an agreed late April target date for the talks to conclude. The prisoners were the third batch of 104 detainees that Netanyahu pledged to release in four stages when the peace talks were revived in July. All were imprisoned before the 1993 Oslo accords, which officially launched the Middle East peace process.Palestinians hailed the freed prisoners as heroes imprisoned for fighting against the Israeli occupation, with some welcomed back to Ramallah in the West Bank, others to east Jerusalem and the remainder into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The 18 men taken to Ramallah were warmly embraced by the Western-backed Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in his presidential compound before laying flowers on the grave of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.Abbas pledged to the prisoners and their exuberant families that there would be no final agreement (with Israel) until all prisoners were in their homes. The Islamist Hamas movement ruling Gaza hailed the prisoner release, but reiterated its rejection of the peace talks and slammed the notion that freeing prisoners justified Israeli settlement expansion. The release of any prisoner is a gain for our people, Gazas Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya told a news conference in the besieged Palestinian territory. But we reject negotiating with the occupation (Israel) and we do not accept that settlements should be expanded in exchange for that.Netanyahu meanwhile criticised the heroes welcome given to the released prisoners, who had served 19 to 28 years for killing Israeli civilians or soldiers. While we are prepared to take very painful steps in an effort to try and reach an agreement they, along with their highest leadership, are celebrating, he told a conference in the northern Israeli town of Tiberias.Murderers are not heroes, Netanyahu said.New settlement plans expectedTuesdays release was expected to be accompanied by the announcement of new construction plans for Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, including east Jerusalem, as the previous two prisoner releases were.Such a move is likely to infuriate the Palestinians and the international community, providing a further challenge for Kerry, whose intense shuttle diplomacy managed to revive the talks after a three-year hiatus. The pressure on Netanyahu to make such an announcement comes both from within his own coalition government -- the housing minister lives in a West Bank settlement and hardliners oppose any peace talks -- and from the Israeli public.Kerry will also have to quell tensions that rose after an Israeli ministerial committee on Sunday gave initial approval to a bill annexing Jordan Valley settlements, a largely symbolic move expected to be shot down by the government.A poll conducted by Jerusalems Hebrew University said Tuesday that 63 percent of Israelis and 53 percent of Palestinians supported a two-state solution.Around 41 percent of some 600 Israeli respondents said the Jewish state should yield to any US pressure to accept a two-state solution, but 43 percent were against. The prisoner release, shortly after 0000 GMT, came after an Israeli court rejected a last-minute appeal by victims families. The families had especially protested the release of the five east Jerusalem prisoners, which they said contradicted a committment made by Netanyahu.

European markets enjoy bumper gain in 2013

LONDON (AFP) - European stocks surged in 2013 on growing investor optimism, supportive central bank monetary policy and easing eurozone crisis fears, dealers said.Londons benchmark FTSE 100 index of top companies leapt 14.43 percent over the last 12 months in the biggest annual increase since 2009, aided also by the recovering British economy. The FTSE rose by a modest 0.26 percent on Tuesday to end 2013 at 6,749.09 points in an early finish. The French CAC 40 meanwhile soared 18 percent over the course of the year, after adding 0.47 percent in value to end at 4,295.95 points on Tuesday. This year most likely will be remembered as a year where things in Europe started finally to stabilise, said Markus Huber, trader at broker Peregrine & Black. In 2013, many investors were simply relieved that the European financial crisis did not get worse.Looking ahead, he added: 2014 should show if the financial crisis can really be left behind or if the calm has only been temporary. In the long run it will only be economic growth and low budget deficits and debt which will convince investors that the financial crisis has indeed been overcome.Frankfurts DAX 30 was shut on Tuesday, one day after falling 0.39 percent to finish the year at 9,552.16 points.Over the course of 2013, however, Frankfurt soared by a staggering 25.5 percent, after a series of record peaks.2013 has been a stellar year for the stock market, said analyst David Madden at trading firm IG.The eurozone has managed to shake its debt-crisis image, even though little has actually improved in terms fundamentals.Stocks have also been boosted by the upbeat global economic outlook, low interest rates and central bank stimulus policies.Like central banks in Britain, the United States and Japan, the European Central Bank (ECB) has used super-low rates and injected liquidity into the financial system to encourage lending and thereby boost investment and consumer spending.Markets have been propped up by looser monetary policies and stimulus from the US Federal Reserve, Bank of England, Bank of Japan and ECB, as investors take advantage of the ample supply of liquidity being pumped by these central banks, ETX Capital trader Ishaq Siddiqi told AFP.He added that the low interest rate environment for US, UK and eurozone means the atmosphere ... is seen as accommodative, allowing risk appetite to build.Huber noted that central banks had helped to soothe eurozone worries. Very low interest rates for an extended period of time, set by major central banks, and decisive action on their part have contributed for the storm in the financial markets, caused by the European financial crisis, to subside, he said.Frankfurt, London and Paris will remain closed on Wednesday for New Years Day and will reopen for business on Thursday.Investor sentiment was also bolstered this year after the Fed decided earlier this month to scale back its vast $85 billion-per-month stimulus policy.Dealers drew strength from the Dows record close overnight on Wall Street, with the market jumping 0.16 percent to register its fourth all-time high in the past five sessions and the 51st of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.16 percent to close at a record 16,504.29 points on Monday. The index has risen about four percent since the Fed announced on December 18 that it plans to scale back its stimulus in January 2014, boosting hopes over the health of the worlds biggest economy.Across in Asia on Tuesday, equities mostly rose on the last day of 2013, after another record-breaking session on Wall Street.Hong Kong stocks added 0.26 percent to close at 23,306.39 points -- putting on 2.87 percent in 2013.Sydney was flat but closed the year more than 15 percent higher.Shanghai won 0.88 percent. However, the Chinese market finished down 6.75 percent for 2013, making it one of the worlds worst performers.Tokyo, Manila, Seoul, Bangkok and Jakarta were closed for the holiday. While Japans Nikkei closed Monday with a 57 percent advance over the year -- its strongest performance in four decades making it the worlds best performer -- Shanghai ended a torrid 2013 that saw it suffer two liquidity crises. The US dollar was pressured Tuesday by data showing that US pending home sales rose 0.2 percent in November. That was the first rise in five months but below forecasts of a 1.5-percent gain.

LG polls in Punjab likely to be delayed

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab government has decided to hold elections after conducting new demarcation of the constituencies in the province.According to official sources, the provincial government with PML-N's central leadership's consultation decided not to hold local bodies election on January 30.The sources said; after declaring new delimitations in Punjab as illegal by the LHC, the government decided to hold elections after conducting new demarcation of the constituencies in the province. On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has declared new delimitations of the constituencies in the province void.A full-bench of the high court in its ruling directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to conduct new demarcation of the constituencies in the province. The court also ruled to hold local bodies elections in accordance with the schedule. On Monday, Additional Attorney General Naseer Bhutta, while opposing the petition, said the new delimitations were done according to the local government law and now the delimitation process could not be questioned before a court of law. He said that after issuance of the election schedule the delimitations could not be done.A resident of Toba Tek Singh, Iqrar Hussain had filed the petition in this regard.Petitioner counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique said both the benches did not consider the constitutional implication of section 10-A.He said that under article 199 of the Constitution, the LHC had unlimited powers to take up constitutional and legal issues. He said it was an issue of public interest and doors should not be closed to elect a public representative and the LHC had every authority to settle the issue.Petitioner counsel had earlier submitted that LHC single bench had given decision in favour of delimitation while another single bench had decided against it. He said that two parallel decisions by the LHC had created anomaly and a large bench should adjudicate upon the matter to remove the irregularity. He said that the provincial government had taken steps for delimitation of areas for these elections. He said that the authority of delimitation rested with the election commission and the Punjab government action was illegal. He also said that neither government nor courts could decide about delimitation once election schedule was announced. He requested that the provincial government should be restrained from carrying out delimitation and should also be directed to hold early and party-based elections.

DAMASCUS, (AFP) - A December 31 deadline to remove part of the Syrian regimes chemical weapons arsenal from the country for destruction has been missed, with ships due to receive the materials returning to Cyprus. In Syria, meanwhile, a newspaper quoted government officials as saying invitations to a peace meeting in Switzerland next month had not been issued, blaming the delay on disarray among the countrys opposition groups. And in northern Aleppo, at least 10 people were killed when a regime tank shell slammed into a bus in Aleppo city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.A Norwegian frigate and a Danish warship had been near the Syrian coast waiting to dock at the port in Latakia to escort chemical materials to Italy, ahead of their destruction at sea on a US ship. But the vessels returned to port in Cyprus on Monday night as it became clear that the removal mission would not go ahead as scheduled.Lars Hovtun, a spokesman for the Norwegian ship HNoMS Helge Ingstad gave no new date for the mission to escort the dangerous cargo out of Syria. We are still on high alert to go into Syria, he said. We still dont know exactly when the orders will come. The international disarmament mission in Syria had acknowledged on Saturday it was unlikely the weapons could be transported to Latakia in time for the December 31 deadline set for the removal of key weapons components. But the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons remained positive on Tuesday, saying the overall plan to rid Syria of its chemical arsenal was on track. An enormous amount of work has been accomplished in three months, OPCW spokesman Christian Chartier told AFP.Syrias chemical arsenal has been completely neutralised, the chemical agents and chemical products are under international control, have been sealed... the effective dismantling of the production and filling plants is on course. All unfilled munitions have been destroyed, so even if the Syrians tried to get their hands on certain chemical products they wouldnt have the weapons to use them, Chartier said.Their capacity to produce and use chemical weapons has been reduced to zero.Chartier said the operation was still on track to meet a deadline to rid Syria of its chemical arsenal by mid-2014.The most important deadline in our eyes is June 30, and nothing leads us to believe that it wont be met, he said. The failure to meet the December 31 deadline underlines the complexity of the task of disarming Syria of its chemical weapons in the middle of a bloody civil war.On Saturday, the UN and OPCW said the war, logistical problems, and bad weather had held up the transport of chemical agents to Latakia for pick-up.Syria agreed to join the Chemical Weapons Convention and turn over its arsenal for destruction in the wake of a devastating chemical weapons attack that prompted the United States to threaten military action against Damascus. The August 21 chemical attack, which the opposition and the United States blamed on the Syrian regime, is believed to have killed hundreds of people on the outskirts of Damascus.Syrias Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi, addressing the parliament on Tuesday, said the government was complying with its obligations. We were able to accomplish what was agreed upon, destroying the chemical production and mixing sites, he said. Now we have started collecting these materials so they can be transferred to the Syrian ports and taken to other places and destroyed within a timeframe that Syria has committed to.On the diplomatic front, Syrias Al-Watan newspaper quoted a foreign ministry source as saying invitations to a peace conference scheduled for January 22 in the Swiss town of Montreux. The source said invites were to have been sent by December 28, and the delay was the result of the floundering efforts to form a delegation representing the opposition. The key opposition National Coalition has yet to officially announce it is attending the conference, and there are questions about whether staunch regime ally Iran will be invited. In Aleppo city meanwhile, the Observatory said 10 people, including two children, were killed when a regime tank shell hit a bus.The monitoring group said the toll could rise as many of those injured were in critical condition.

Iran says good progress in nuclear talks

TEHRAN, Dec 31, 2013 (AFP) - Iran's chief negotiator said Tuesday talks in Geneva with world powers through the night on implementing a landmark nuclear deal had made good progress, according to media.Negotiations continued throughout the night until early on Tuesday morning in Geneva and the two sides have made good progress on different issues, lead negotiator Abbas Araqchi said in comments carried by official news agency IRNA.They are going to submit their conclusions to the vice-ministers and political heads because there are still questions to be resolved on the political level, he said, stressing that the experts had done their work.He added that there would probably be a meeting next week with Olga Schmitt, the deputy to European Union foreign policy head Catherine Ashton, who has been representing the P51 group in Tehran.Experts from Iran and the so-called P51 -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China plus Germany -- have been holding technical talks on implementing an agreement reached November 24 on Iran's controversial nuclear programme. The interim deal requires that Iran freeze or curbs its nuclear activities for six months in exchange for some sanctions relief while the two sides try to reach a comprehensive agreement.Hamid Baeedinejad, who heads the Iranian delegation of experts, said the Geneva agreement should be implemented in late January, the ISNA news agency reported.According to the conclusions of talks held with technical experts from the P51 group, it has been agreed to start the application of the Geneva agreement in the last 10 days of January, he said.Baeedinejad said that political officials from the two parties had yet to endorse an application date.Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran is covertly pursuing a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian programme, charges denied by Tehran, which insists its uranium enrichment is for purely peaceful purposes.

Iran nuclear talks to resume Monday after holiday break

TEHRAN (AFP) - Experts from Iran and world powers will on Monday resume technical talks on implementing a landmark nuclear deal after a Christmas break, both sides said Friday.Abbas Araqchi told the official IRNA news agency that the discussions with the six major world powers are to resume in Geneva. The technical discussions between Iran and the 51 group will resume Monday in Geneva... to define modalities for implementing the agreement struck on November 24, he said. The negotiations are aimed at setting a framework and a timeline for the nuclear accord.A spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton also confirmed that the talks will resume on Monday in Switzerland.Technical experts meeting with Iran will take place on December 30 in Geneva, spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told AFP via email.Iran has already held two sets of talks with representatives from Britain, China, France, Russia, Germany and the United States. The last round concluded in Geneva on December 22 after little progress was made, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.Araqchi, who is also deputy foreign minister, said at the time the discussions were progressing slowly because of interpretations of points of the agreement.Under the Geneva accord, Iran agreed to roll back or freeze parts of its nuclear drive for six months in exchange for modest sanctions relief and apromise by Western powers not to impose new sanctions.Western powers suspect Iran's nuclear activities mask military objectives, despite Tehran's repeated insistence that they are entirely peaceful.

First UN reinforcements arrive in South Sudan

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The first peacekeeping reinforcements arrived Friday in South Sudan as the United Nations warned that tensions remain dangerously high despite efforts to organize a ceasefire between government and rebel forces. The 72 member police contingent, moved from Democratic Republic of Congo, were the first of up to 6,000 troops authorized by the UN Security Council to bolster the hard pressed UN mission. The UN said dangers remain so acute that large numbers of bodies had been seen outside at least one UN base, but could not be collected.UN peacekeeping spokesman Kieran Dwyer said the Bangladeshi police will play a key role maintaining order and security in UN bases where 63,000 people have sought refuge since fighting erupted on December 15.More troops and equipment were expected to arrive on Saturday.More than 1,000 people have been killed since army forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and former vice president Riek Machar started fighting each other. The 15-nation Security Council voted on Tuesday to allow the reinforcements.East African leaders said earlier that Kiir had agreed to a ceasefire. But Machar would not immediately commit to halting hostilities and the UN warned that both sides remain on a conflict footing. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) says that the security situation in Upper Nile and Unity states is tense, with reports of the presence of anti-government and government forces, said a UN statement.Diplomats said the rival sides were massing their forces around Malakal and Bentiu, the main cities in the two key oil producing states.UNMISS says that at least 63,000 civilians are now sheltering in UN bases around the country, including 25,000 in two Juba compounds; 15,000 in Bor, 12,000 in Bentiu and 8,000 in Malakal.Bentiu is tense and there are reports that fighting may resume in the coming days, said the UN's Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a daily briefing report.Government forces are believed to have consolidated their positions in and around Bor, added the UN statement. Anti-government forces remain in the vicinity and the situation remains tense.Bor is the capital of Jonglei state, a longstanding focus of the ethnic divisions highlighted by the new conflict. Machar is an ethnic Nuer, while South Sudan's president is from the rival Dinka tribe.Following bitter fighting for Bor, UN aid workers only returned to the town on Thursday to help displaced civilians, said the OCHA.Following the intensive fighting for the town, there are reportedly a large number of bodies in the open near the base, which poses a risk for disease outbreaks, the office added. There is a real risk of cholera breaking out on the base, and there is an urgent need to improve sanitation and provision of clean water.

13 killed as Yemen tank blasts funeral tent

Posted:

ADEN (AFP) - An army tank shelled a funeral tent erected by the Southern Movement at a school in Yemen on Friday, killing 13 people including children, a medic and witnesses said.Tensions are running high in the formerly independent south, home to an increasingly assertive secessionist movement, raising fears that Al-Qaeda's powerful Yemen affiliate could exploit the growing unrest in the Arab world's poorest country.A long-running dispute over whether and how to grant the south limited autonomy has hindered the political transition following the 33-year rule of Ali Abdullah Saleh, who stepped down last year following Arab Spring-inspired protests.Thirteen people have died, among them three children in the attack, a medic from Al-Nasr hospital in the southern province of Daleh told AFP. Medics at other hospitals said more than 20 people were wounded, some critically.Witnesses said a tank shelled the tent in Sanah, 300 kilometres (185 miles) south of the capital, with one telling AFP that troops had kept firing when we tried to hospitalise the casualties, adding that there are wounded victims still inside the tent.Witnesses later the wounded were finally evacuated. The Southern Movement -- which is campaigning for autonomy or outright secession -- had set up the tent for mourners paying their condolences after a man was killed in clashes with security forces on Monday. The clashes in Daleh erupted when secessionists tried to storm the governorate building to hoist the flag of the former South Yemen. The fighting left two Yemeni policemen and a civilian dead.State news agency Saba quoted a top security official as saying that President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has formed a committee to investigate Friday's attack.Violence has intensified in the south amid anger over the killing of local tribal chief Said Ben Habrish and his bodyguards at an army checkpoint earlier this month after they refused to hand over their weapons. Two soldiers were also killed in the exchange. On Thursday, gunmen killed four soldiers and wounded several others in an attack on a checkpoint in the southeast Hadramawt province, an Al-Qaeda stronghold.

Beirut car bomb kills Lebanese critic of Syria

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - A huge car bomb in Beirut killed a leading Lebanese critic of the Syrian regime and five others Friday, leaving a scene of carnage in the heart of the capital.Tensions have soared in Lebanon since the outbreak of the war in neighbouring Syria, as the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah movement has sent troops to back the regime while their rivals in the Western-backed March 14 coalition have supported the Sunni-led rebels.Dozens were wounded in the explosion, which left people with their clothes on fire and others lying on the ground, bloodied and in shock, as ambulances and security forces raced to the scene and plumes of smoke rose over the capitals skyline.Mohammad Chatah, 62, was killed in the blast as he headed to a meeting of the March 14 coalition at the mansion of ex-premier Saad Hariri.Chatah, an influential economist, former finance minister and ex-envoy to Washington, had served as adviser to ex-premier Fuad Siniora and remained a close aide to his successor, Hariri, who has lived abroad since 2011 for security reasons.Hariris father, billionaire ex-premier Rafiq Hariri, was killed in a massive seafront blast in 2005 just blocks away from Fridays explosion, in an assassination his supporters blamed on Syria.State news agency NNA said more than 50 people were wounded and more than 10 buildings badly damaged by the blast, which officials said was caused by 50-60 kilos (110-132 pounds) of explosives. The March 14 coalition implied Damascus and Hezbollah were behind the attack without naming them, saying in a statement that the criminal is the same, he who is thirsty for the blood of Syrians... he and his Lebanese allies.Hariri said the killers are those who are hiding from international justice and who have spread the regional fire to the (Lebanese) nation... and who killed Rafiq Hariri.March 14 meanwhile called for the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon, tasked with investigating the Hariri assassination, to also investigate Chatahs killing.Five Hezbollah members have been accused of involvement in Hariris killing and are due to be tried in absentia by the court. The tribunals first hearing is set for January 16.A source close to Chatah called the bombing a message ahead of the (special tribunal) trial, saying You want justice? Here it is.Chatah was the ninth high-profile anti-Syria figure killed in Lebanon since Hariris assassination.

Three NATO personnel killed in Kabul suicide car bomb

Posted:

KABUL (AFP) - A Taliban suicide attacker detonated an explosives-packed car next to a NATO military convoy in Kabul on Friday, killing three NATO personnel and injuring six civilian passers-by, officials said. The blast in the Afghan capital left the twisted remains of the attackers car spread across the scene along with several other badly-damaged vehicles, including a NATO sports utility vehicle, witnesses said.Three International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members died following a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device attack in Kabul, Afghanistan today, a statement from the NATO mission said.ISAF did not release the nationality of the dead, in line with coalition policy to leave identification to national authorities. The attack occurred on a main road that passes near to a series of government compounds and ISAF military facilities in Kabul on the way to the eastern city of Jalalabad.A car packed with explosives was detonated by a suicide bomber... as a result six of our civilian countrymen were injured, the ministry of interior said in a statement. An AFP reporter said that ambulances, firefighters and armoured vehicles from the US-led ISAF mission in Afghanistan rushed to the blast site, which was quickly cordoned off by police.I was in my bakery shop when I heard a bang that shattered all the windows, Nehmatullah, who uses only one name, told AFP.I saw at least two bodies lying on the street and covered in blood, then came two vehicles of foreign forces and the soldiers pulled out two bodies of foreigners from a damaged black SUV.ISAF and Afghan security forces removed damaged vehicles using trucks and transporters.Among the injured being treated in a nearby hospital was a middle-aged Afghan man with wounds to his head and hands.ISAF troops travel through Kabul in fast-moving and heavily protected convoys, but they have regularly been targeted by Taliban militants fighting a 12-year insurgency against the US-backed government.A martyrdom suicide attack took place in the 9th district of Kabul on a guesthouse of invading forces... a convoy of foreign forces was passing, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mijahid said in a statement. In the attack, 12 Americans soldiers were killed and a number of them were wounded, and a number of their vehicles were also damaged. The Taliban routinely exaggerate death tolls after attacks. In May, 15 people, including two US soldiers and four ISAF contractors, were killed in a similar car bomb that targeted a convoy in Kabul.Fridays suicide bombing came after the insurgents fired two rockets into the US embassy compound in central Kabul early on Christmas Day. No one was injured. The militants have vowed to step up pressure on foreign forces and Afghan authorities before next years presidential election in April and the withdrawal of US-led NATO combat troops.Kabul has seen a drop in attacks in recent months after a series of high-profile strikes earlier in the year, with the intelligence agencies claiming to have foiled several plots involving truck bombs and suicide blasts. The Supreme Court, the airport, foreign compounds and the presidential palace were all targeted in major attacks during 2013.NATO forces are withdrawing from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting the Taliban, but negotiations have stalled on a security accord that would allow some US and NATO troops to stay after 2014.

Tennis: Nadal loses to Ferrer on return to courts

Posted:

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Rafael Nadal got his season underway with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the semi-finals of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi on Friday. It was the world number one's first match since losing in straight sets to Novak Djokovic in the final of the World Tour Finals in London on November 11.Playing ahead of the official ATP season-opener in nearby Doha next week, Ferrer looked the sharper from the start, breaking in the ninth game to take the first set.It was more of the same in the second set as Nadal struggled to find his range against an opponent who already had a match under his belt, having defeated Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarter-finals on Thursday.I think, for a first match to play against a guy who has practised for a month and who played a match yesterday, on a very fast court, I was happy with how I played, Nadal told The National newspaper.I had a few opportunities, break points, but he played well and he converted the chances better than me. I had a few mistakes but in my opinion I was better than I thought I would be right now.Ferrer goes on to play Djokovic, who was being watched by new coach Boris Becker, in Saturday's final after the world number two defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.He has one of the strongest serves in the game, and it's very precise, said Djokovic.I exceeded my own expectations. My performance today was great.Ferrer, who announced last week that he was splitting with long-time coach Javier Piles in a bid to finally win a Grand Slam title, said he had been helped by having already played in the tournament.I think the fact that I had already played a match on the same surface meant that I was better prepared than Rafa, said Ferrer.I am happy with the state of my game and will look to produce my best tennis for the final. In earlier action, Andy Murray chalked up his first win since returning to action after a three-month injury lay-off by defeating Switzerland's Wawrinka 6-3, 6-4.The 26-year-old Wimbledon champion had back surgery in September and did not play again until he lost to Tsonga in the quarter-finals on Thursday.Wawrinka lost to Ferrer on the same day and the match between him and Murray was to decide who would finish fifth in the unofficial three-day tournament that saw Nadal and Djokovic joining in at the semi-final stage.Murray looked much sharper against Wawrinka than he had looked in the second set against Tsonga and had little difficulty in seeing off the challenge of the world number eight. The world number four got the better of three successive breaks to take the first set and then forged ahead again with a break for 4-3 in the second.Wawrinka saved a match point on his own serve with a forehand winner, but Murray confidently served out for the victory. In a courtside interview Murray said: I feel pretty good, a lot better than I did a few months ago. I just need to play more matches like this because the intensity's a lot higher than you can get in practice. It was good to get two matches against top players. Everyone needs matches at this stage, especially me. It's been a perfect start and hopefully I'll get better.Murray will next make the short trip over to Doha where he will play in the AFP season-opener tournament along with Nadal.

Tennis: Federer signs up 'childhood hero' Edberg

PARIS (AFP) - Roger Federer on Friday announced that his childhood hero Stefan Edberg will become part of his coaching team for ten weeks at the Australian Open, the season's first Grand Slam.Edberg, a former world number one and a six-time major winner, had been hitting with Federer over the winter as the Swiss gears up for what could be a make-or-break season.I am happy to announce that beginning in Melbourne, Stefan Edberg will join Severin Luthi on my coaching team, said Federer, the 17-time major winner but whose ranking is now down at six in the world.Severin, who has been part of my team for the last seven years, will do most of the weeks and Stefan has agreed to work with us for at least 10 weeks start ing at the Australian Open in Melbourne.Stefan was my childhood hero, and I am really looking forward to spending time and learning from him.Edberg, 47, won the Australian Open in 1985 and 1987, Wimbledon in 1988 and 1990 and back-to-back US Opens in 1991 and 1992.I'm really excited to be part of Roger's team and I hope together we can bring out his best tennis, said Edberg.Federer, who announced on Christmas Eve that he and wife Mirka are to become parents for a third time, split with longtime coach Paual Annacone in October. The 32-year-old becomes the latest top player to hire a former Grand Slam title-winning player as coach.Novak Djokovic has hired Boris Becker, Richard Gasquet has taken on Sergi Bruguera, Marin Cilic has renewed his partnership with Goran Ivanisevic while Kei Nishikori signed up Michael Chang.Undoubtedly, they were moves inspired by Andy Murray's success with Ivan Lendl which has yielded the 2012 US Open title and 2013 Wimbledon triumph. The only man not interested in changing is world number one Rafael Nadal who has been coached by his uncle Toni since childhood.I will stick to my team. I always feel when I play bad, it is my fault and when I'm winning I'm doing the right things. I had success in my career with the same team, said Nadal.I had good and worst moments with the same team. I understand if anything goes wrong, nobody is responsible more than me.Luthi said he was looking forward to working with Edberg.Roger will play a full schedule next year so we both wanted to make sure we had a solid team in place, he said.I want to continue to improve and innovate Roger's game and I really look forward to be working with Stefan. Like Roger, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Stefan and I am sure he will bring a lot to our team as Roger continues to chase titles in 2014.Federer, whose last Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2012 and did not feature in any of the four major championship finals in 2013, begins his season next week in Brisbane.

Tennis: Azarenka fighting to get fit for 2014

Posted:

HUA HIN (AFP) - World number two Victoria Azarenka said Friday she was battling to get her fitness back on track after a disappointing 2013 as she prepared to face world number one Serena Williams in Thailand.Last year I had some difficulties but now I am working hard to keep up my fitness, the Belarusian 24-year-old said before the exhibition match.Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open champion who ended 2013 with just three titles, said she was hoping for a victory in the Land of Smiles to bring her good luck again in Melbourne.I won this exhibition match for two consecutive years and went on to win the Australian Open which is very good, she told reporters in the seaside resort of Hua Hin.The two players, who were also due to hit the catwalk for a special fashion show, appeared unfazed by recent deadly political violence which has shaken the capital Bangkok.Asked about the unrest, Azarenka said: I came here to play tennis and I only wanted to focus on tennis. I wanted to make the people happy and entertain them.Williams, 32, ended 2013 with 11 titles while triumphs at the French and US Opens took her Grand Slam haul to 17.She enjoyed a match record of 78 wins against just four defeats, claimed the season-ending WTA Championships title and became the oldest number one player.Asked what would be her next challenge, Williams said: I just want to enjoy playing tennis. For me, it is the challenge everyday. I enjoy playing tennis and am happy to play.Azarenka has won just three of her 16 meetings against Williams, although she split their four clashes in 2013 and for a second successive season took her great rival to three sets in the US Open final. It was mostly a year to forget for the Belarusian former number one who limped out of Wimbledon in the early stages with a knee injury. She failed to reach the WTA Championships semi-finals in Turkey in October as she battled a lower back injury and a month earlier she crashed out of the China Open in the first round.Azarenka will start her 2014 season with a return to Brisbane where she was forced to withdraw from the semi-finals a year earlier due to a toe infection on her right foot. But she went on to win the Australian Open later that month for a second straight year -- one of her few highlights of 2013.

Boxing: Mayweather taunts Khan, Pacquiao with Christmas KOs

LAS VEGAS (AFP) - Floyd Mayweather still has not said who his next opponent will be, but the unbeaten US boxer has taken to social media to taunt potential foes Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan.Mayweather posted drawings of himself Wednesday on Twitter and Instagram delivering hard punches to Filipino icon Pacquiao and Marcos Maidana and another standing over Khan as the Englishman was falling backward to the canvas.Just imagine what Amir Con Artist will get if his name gets picked in the Mayweather sweepstakes, Mayweather posted on his Twitter account.Mayweather, 36, also poked fun at Pacquiao, who lost to Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez before bouncing back to beat Brandon Rios last month and renew talk about a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.Juan Marquez ate Timothy Bradleys leftovers. Now youre telling me I got to eat Juan Marquezs leftovers? Let me talk to the IRS about this...Mayweather posted on Twitter, adding a zinger about Philippines tax issues that nagged Pac-Man earlier this year.On Monday, Mayweather posted a Twitter message showing pictures of him and Pacquiao with portable phones and captions, harkening to prior failed talks to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.Manny, Ill pay you 40 million to fight said the caption under Mayweather. No way, youre crazy. 50/50 or nothing was under Pacquiaos picture.Above the entire lot was Mayweathers overall message: This is my Christmas card to the world... Happy Sleepy Holidays zzzzzzzzzzzzIn late 2009 and early 2010, Pacquiao and Mayweather were considered the worlds top pound-for-pound fighters and record profits were expected from a showdown between them. But a disagreement over pre-fight blood testing scuttled talks and with Mayweather vowing never to do business with Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum, there seems little chance the fight will be made now. That has left Khan and Maidana the top names speculated for Mayweathers planned May 3 fight in Las Vegas. Pacquiao has a tentative April 12 bout set against an undetermined foe.Khan pulled out of a world title fight against American Devon Alexander, fueling speculation it was because he would next fight Mayweather. At 45-0 with 26 knockouts, Mayweather is approaching the 46-0 career mark of retired Welsh star Joe Calzaghe and the iconic 49-0 mark of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano.Mayweather, who beat Saul Canelo Alvarez last September in his most recent bout, has a contract for four more fights in the next 2 1/2 years.

US oil prices close above $100 a barrel on strong data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - US oil prices closed above $100 a barrel for the first time since October on Friday after a weekly US oil inventory report showed strong demand for crude and petroleum products.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for February delivery rose 77 cents to $100.32 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for February delivery increased 20 cents to $112.18 a barrel. US crude inventories fell by 4.7 million barrels, more than the 2.2 million expected by analysts in a Wall Street Journal survey.Gasoline stockpiles fell by 600,000, while analysts had projected a build of 1 million barrels. The demand still came in, said Stephen Schork of consultancy the Schork Group. The data constituted a supportive report, he added.Schork said he was especially impressed by a 1.8 percent increase in gasoline demand from the prior week, despite poor weather that would have impeded driving in some part of the country. The report comes amid other signs the US economy is picking up. Reports earlier this week on new home sales, durable goods orders and jobless claims have also bested expectations. Schork said the decline in crude inventories was not as important because refiners typically reduce inventories before the end of the year for tax purposes.Oil traders have also been watching developments in South Sudan in recent days, where violence in a key oil-producing region has dented crude output and led to numerous oilfield staff evacuations. East African leaders in Nairobi on Friday announced that South Sudan's government has agreed to an immediate ceasefire after nearly two weeks of heavy fighting with rebels. The statement appeared to provide the first glimmer of hope for a ceasefire since the fighting began, but after fighting in several strategic oil-producing areas in the north of the country.

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro reached two-year highs against other major currencies on Friday after hawkish comments by a German central banker.Near 2200 GMT, the euro traded at $1.3743, up from $1.3690 on Thursday after earlier peaking at $1.3893, the highest since October 2011.The euro also advanced against the Japanese currency, trading at 144.37 yen from 143.47 yen -- after earlier hitting 145.69 yen, the highest level since October 2008.The dollar advanced to 105.13 yen from 104.80 yen.Traders were stirred to buy the euro after German Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, who sits on the European Central Bank's Governing Council, told a German newspaper that subdued inflationary pressure should not justify unfettered monetary easing. While Mr. Weidmann is a known monetary hawk, his comments overnight gave investors an excuse to push the euro higher, which triggered automatic orders that likely exaggerated the move, said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange, Inc.Weidmann's comments follow recent statements by ECB President Mario Draghi, pledging to take action if the European economy does not improve.Among other currencies, the British pound rose to $1.6475 from $1.6410.The dollar dipped to 0.8913 Swiss franc from 0.8965.

Iran cancels Pakistan gas pipeline loan

Posted:

TEHRAN (AP) - Iran has canceled a planned $500 million loan to Pakistan to build part of a pipeline to bring natural gas from the Islamic Republic.Deputy Oil Minister Ali Majedi said Iran has no obligation to finance the Pakistani side of the project and also doesn't have the money.Iran has already invested over $2 billion to construct the Iranian side of the pipeline. But there are serious doubts about how Pakistan could finance the $2 billion needed to construct the pipeline on its territory. Iran's former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had pledged the loan.Pakistan has welcomed an Iranian offer to approach third parties, including European companies, to finance the project.Pakistani officials were told in recent talks that, given the sanctions, Iran is not able to finance construction of the pipeline (in Pakistan) and has no obligation to do so, he said. His comments were posted on the oil ministry's website, shana.ir, Saturday.Majedi complained that Pakistan has done little to construct its own section of the project. Under a valid contract, Pakistan is required to finish construction of the pipeline on its territory by the end of 2014.If a contractor is chosen today and pipeline construction begins today, it will take four years to complete it. Should Pakistan fail to take gas by the end of next year, Iran will demand compensation under the terms of the contract, he said. The Iran-Pakistan pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its mushrooming energy needs. Pakistanis experience frequent blackouts. The U.S. has opposed the project but leaders of both Iran and Pakistan have vowed to implement what they refer to as the peace pipeline.

City thrash Arsenal 6-3 to throw open title race

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AP) - Manchester City delivered another devastating attacking display to beat Premier League leader Arsenal 6-3 in a wild shootout on Saturday, leaving the chastened leaders in range of the chasing pack in the title race. After putting four goals past Manchester United and six past Tottenham at Etihad Stadium this season, City dismantled another of its main rivals for an eighth straight home win that showed just why Manuel Pellegrini's freescoring team is most pundits' favorites for the title.Arsenal, weary after a grueling Champions League defeat at Napoli on Wednesday, was breached by prolific strikers Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo in the first half and disintegrated after the break as Fernandinho (two), David Silva and Yaya Toure plundered more goals.Pellegrini's players are living up to their tag as the Premier League's entertainers they have scored 35 goals in eight matches at the Etihad and are now just three points off Arsenal. At times the tempo was frightening, City captain Vincent Kompany said. It is a real fortress here.Arsenal arrived in Manchester with the league's stingiest defense and left with its title credentials back under the microscope.Theo Walcott scored twice, to make it 1-1 and 3-2, with Per Mertesacker grabbing the Gunners' other goal in second-half stoppage time. But they were ripped apart by City's sparkling forward department, reviving memories of their 8-2 loss at Manchester United in August 2011.This was Arsenal's third high-intensity match in the space of seven days, having drawn 1-1 with Everton last weekend, and they have clearly taken their toll. Thankfully for the creaking leaders, they have a much-needed nine-day break before playing Chelsea next. Our strength until now was our defensive discipline and that went as the game went on, said Wenger, who refused to use the short turnaround from the Napoli game as an excuse. It was 6-3 but what hurts me more is that we had an opportunity to put Man City at nine points (behind). It's three tonight and that's difficult to swallow.City's confidence couldn't be higher at the moment even its second-choice team beat reigning champion Bayern Munich 3-2 in the Champions League in midweek. And goals are coming from all areas, with Brazilian defensive midfielder Fernandinho finding time to maraud forward and join the party here. For me, it's very important to be an entertaining team, City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. There are managers who prefer to score one goal, hold their team back and try to counter attack. Our philosophy is to continue trying to score more goals. That's the best way to win. With its away form slowly improving, City appears to be the team to beat in what is proving to be an open, exciting title race. The only negative was the sight of Aguero hobbling off with a right calf injury at the start of the second half. He will have a scan on Sunday. The omens weren't good for Arsenal from the very first minutes, with the visitors pinned back in their own half and City's overpowering midfield sharper both in possession and off the ball.Fernandinho delivered arguably his best performance since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in the offseason and the return from injury of playmaker Silva added even more guile. The last thing Arsenal's tired backline needed was to deal with a sprightly Aguero and the Argentina striker continued his brilliant scoring run by volleying in expertly in the 14th minute after Samir Nasri's corner was flicked in at the near post by Martin Demichelis. It was Aguero's 19th goal in 20 matches in all competitions.Walcott equalized against the run of play in the 31st, meeting Mesut Ozil's cut-back with a sidefooted shot that took a slight deflection off Demichelis.Back came City, though, Negredo guided home a cross by the galloping Pablo Zabaleta in the 39th. Worse for Arsenal, key defender Laurent Koscielny sustained a deep laceration to his left knee as he attempted to cut out the cross and was carried off on a stretcher.Aguero hobbling off in the 48th didn't hamper City, with Fernandinho making it 3-1 within two minutes after Mathieu Flamini failed to collect Ozil's pass across the face of the area. The Brazilian seized on the mistake and curled in a fine finish from 25 yards for his first City goal.Walcott, making his first start since September, curled a brilliant shot past Costel Pantilimon from an angle in the 63rd minute but City wasn't to be denied as Jesus Navas set up fellow Spaniard Silva for the fourth in the 66th and Fernandinho made it 5-2 in the 88th.Mertesacker replied at the start of injury time with a header but Toure had the final say, sweeping home a penalty after James Milner was tripped by Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Barca beat Villarreal, Madrid draw at Osasuna

Posted:

BARCELONA (AP) - Neymar scored twice to help Barcelona beat Villarreal 2-1 and take advantage of Real Madrid's slip as it opened up a five-point lead over its fierce rival at the top of the Spanish league.Third-place Madrid fell behind and settled for a 2-2 draw earlier at Osasuna in a match both sides finished with 10 men, and Barcelona didn't let the chance escape.Barcelona, still without the injured Lionel Messi, again turned to Neymar after his hat trick against Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday to convert a penalty on the half-hour mark and restore the lead in the 68th after Villarreal leveled.Barcelona's eighth win in as many league games at Camp Nou provisionally lifted it three points clear of Atletico Madrid before it hosts Valencia on Sunday.

One fatality was recorded at a new stadium in Brasilia while in Sao Paulo two people died on November 27 after a crane dropped a piece of roofing on them. The Sao Paulo arena will not now be ready until mid-April -- less than two months before the June 12 kick-off between Brazil and Croatia.Construction firm Andrade Gutierrez said an investigation of Saturdays incident would immediately be opened.Only last Tuesday, Manaus coordinator Miguel Capobiango Neto had assured reporters the venue would be ready for December 20 in time for an inauguration on January 15.

Golf: Van der Walt wins Mandela Championship

Posted:

DURBAN (AFP) - South Africa's Dawie Van der Walt fired a four-under 66 during the third and final round to win the Nelson Mandela Championship by two shots at the rain affected EPGA event on Saturday. The 30-year-old finished the shortened tournament on 15 under par to finish ahead of Englishman Matthew Baldwin and Spaniard Jorge Campillo as he picked up his second European title at the saturated Mount Edgecombe golf club. The win comes on the eve of Mandela's funeral after the former president passed away at the age of 95 last week. It's obviously really special, making you part of history, Van der Walt said following his victory which follows his maiden European win last March at the Tshwane Open, also in South Africa. Winning the Nelson Mandela at this time, when it's sad for everyone, everyone is mourning and tomorrow's (Sunday) the big day, it means a lot and it's something I can keep close to my heart for ever. I haven't been in that good form, I've been struggling with an injury, so this is almost overwhelming. To win the last event of the year is going to make Christmas a lot more fun, he added. Frenchman Romain Wattel was alone in fourth three shots back, while South African Oliver Bekker was a further stroke back to complete the top five. Overnight leader Daniel Brooks of England blew a three-shot lead as he ballooned to a six-over score of 76 to slide down the leaderboard and a joint 11th-place finish. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes after heavy rain washed out the first day's play as the European Tour remains in South Africa and heads to the Durban Open which begins next Thursday.

Badminton: Lee close to record Superseries Finals title

Posted:

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - World number one Lee Chong Wei on Saturday advanced to the last round of the BWF World Superseries Finals, closing in on winning the title for a record fourth time. The Malaysian, who won the mens singles crowns from 2008-2010, crushed Denmarks Jan O Jorgensen 21-14, 21-16 in 40 minutes to reach Sundays final on home turf.Lee jointly holds the record of three titles with womens pair Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang of China and Danish mens pair Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen. The two doubles pairs, however, were eliminated in Saturdays semi-finals, paving the way for Lee to rewrite the record books on his own.Wang and Yu, who won from 2010-2012, pulled out due to injury, while Boe and Mogensen lost 21-18, 21-18 to world champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia. It was a straightforward victory for Lee, whose court coverage and ability to retrieve every shuttlecock Jorgensen hit at him frustrated the Dane.Lee beat the French Open champion 23-21, 24-22 at the group stage on Friday.Today, I was ready for him. I was determined to beat him quickly and started the match on fire, the Olympic silver medallist said. The only downside to my victory was that I allowed him back into the match in the second game after taking a big lead.I have to cut this out as it is not good to give opponents a hint of a comeback. In the final, Lee will meet Indonesias Tommy Sugiarto, who beat Japans Kenichi Tago 21-14, 19-21, 21-5.In womens singles, Chinas Li Xuerui easily beat South Koreas Bae Yeon-Ju in two games, while Taiwans Tai Tzu Ying defeated Wang Shixian of China in three games. In the womens doubles, world champions Wang and Yu raised eyebrows when they conceded a walkover to compatriots Ma Jin and Tang Jinhua, after citing a hip injury to Yu.This is not the first time Chinese players have opted out of facing others from their country in international matches, and comes on the heels of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) introducing a random draw for the semi-finals in a bid to avoid game-throwing.The change was prompted by the scandal at last years Olympics, when Wang and Yu together with three other womens pairs were charged for not using their best efforts to win matches. In the finals, Ma and Tang will now take on Denmarks Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl, who defeated South Koreans Jang Ye-Na and Kim So-Young 21-12, 21-18 on Saturday. The Danish duo, who have a good track record in Malaysia, are hoping to become the first European winners of this category. In the mens doubles, Kim Ki-Jung and Kim Sa-Rang defeated fellow South Koreans Ko Sung-Hyun and Lee Yong-Dae 21-14, 19-21, 21-16.

Bombing and shootings kill 15 in Iraq

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Attacks in Iraq, including two bombings in a market and a blast targeting people who give food and water to Shiite pilgrims, killed 15 people on Saturday, officials said.Violence has reached a level this year not seen since 2008, when Iraq was just emerging from a period of brutal sectarian killings, raising fears that the country is falling back into all-out conflict. In the deadliest attack, two bombs exploded in a market in Nahrawan, near Baghdad, killing at least five people and wounding at least 13, while a bomb in a restaurant in Husseiniyah, also close to the capital, killed two people and wounded six.In southern Baghdad, a car bomb targeted people who give food and water to Shiite pilgrims walking to the holy city of Karbala, killing at least four people and wounding at least 13.Other bombings and shootings in Iraq killed four people, among them a local anti-Al-Qaeda militia leader and a policeman, and wounded three police.More people died in violence in the first eight days of this month than in the whole of last December, and over 6,400 people have been killed since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures based on security and medical sources.

Two UN troops dead in suicide attack in north Mali

Posted:

BAMAKO (AFP) - At least two UN troops were killed on Saturday in a suicide attack in Mali's northeastern rebel bastion of Kidal, which came a day before the country holds a second round of legislative polls, a UN source said. The soldiers -- whose nationalities were not given -- died when a suicide bomber ploughed his explosive-laden car into a bank that they were guarding. For the moment, we have at least two dead and several wounded among the MINUSMA African troops, the source said on condition of anonymity, referring to the UN mission in the country. The suicide bomber also died, a regional government source told AFP.There are also a number of wounded among Malian soldiers, the source added.A local Kidal official said Senegalese soldiers were among those who guarded the BMS bank.Early this morning, a booby-trapped car was run into the BMS, killing the bomber, said the official. He added that he saw an individual on fire but could not say if it was the bomber or a soldier.A MINUSMA military official said: The bomber came from the east of the city and went straight to the bank before blowing himself up.There was a huge bang that blew out the windows of some houses up to 500 metres (yards) from the bank.He called the attack well-prepared.Mali is battling to restore stability after Al-Qaeda-linked radicals seized control of its northern half, submitting it to a brutal form of Islamic law for nine months before a French-led military operation launched in January ousted the extremists.Saturday's attack came a day before Mali was to hold a second round of legislative elections, the fourth time that the former French colony in west Africa has gone to the polls in less than six months. The vote is the final stage in Mali's return to democracy after a March 2012 coup that threw it into turmoil and opened a power vacuum that enabled the Islamists to seize the north.

Gaza flooding drives 40,000 from their homes

Posted:

GAZA CITY (AP) - Flooding from heavy rains forced some 40,000 Gaza Strip residents from their homes, including thousands who were taken to safety in boats and military trucks, officials said Saturday. The downpour that began late Wednesday was part of a storm that covered parts of Israel and the West Bank with snow, paralyzed Jerusalem and left thousands in Israel without power. Israeli TV stations showed footage of armored personnel carriers rescuing motorists and said it was the most severe snow storm in decades.Even Gaza with its milder coastal climate saw some snow, though lower-lying areas were mainly hit by flooding.Rescue efforts were hampered by fuel shortages and rolling power cuts that have become more severe in recent months, since Egypt tightened a border blockade of the territory, ruled by the Islamic militant Hamas since 2007.Israel has also restricted access to Gaza since the Hamas takeover, though it sent diesel fuel for heating and four water pumps during the weekend storm.Once the storm is over, the world community needs to bring effective pressure to end the blockade of Gaza, said Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the main U.N aid agency in the territory. Gaza residents must be freed from these man-made constraints to deal with the impact of a natural calamity such as this, he added. In the low-lying areas of Gaza, water has been rising since heavy rains began late Wednesday, flooding streets and homes. One of the hardest hit areas was Nafak Street in Gaza City's Sheik Radwan neighborhood, close to a rainwater reservoir.Said Halawa, an area resident, said the reservoir overflowed Wednesday evening. By Thursday, water had poured into the ground floor of his two-story home where he and he and 41 other members of his extended family live, Halawa said. The family called for help and was evacuated by boat from the upper floor. Halawa said he and his family were taken to a makeshift shelter in a neighborhood school. We got some assistance, some blankets and some food, but I didn't save any of my belongings, said the 52-year-old taxi driver. At another neighbor school, 30 families found shelter. Children slept on desks and on mattresses on the floor. Some of those at the shelter huddled around wood fires in open-air walkways outside the classrooms to stay warm.In all, the flooding forced about 40,000 people from their homes, including more than 5,200 who were taken to safety in boats, military trucks or heavy construction vehicles, government officials said.Another hard-hit area was the refugee camp of Jebaliya in northern Gaza. The local Al Aqsa TV station, run by Hamas, showed Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and Interior Minister Fathi Hamad, both of Hamas, touring Jebaliya in a boat.Housing Minister Yousef Jhariz, who headed the government's crisis team, said the storm caused at least $64 million in damages. One man died from smoke inhalation after burning coal for warmth in his house, health officials said.By Saturday afternoon, teams were fixing downed power lines and piled up sandbags in some areas to protect homes from flooding. The storm hit Gaza at a time when it is buckling under the tightened border closure by Egypt. Over the summer, Egypt's military intensified its blockade after ousting Egypt's Islamist president, Mohammed Morsi, a Hamas ally.Jerusalem and several West Bank towns, meanwhile, were crippled by snow for a third day Saturday. About 28,000 homes in Israel were still without electricity on Saturday, officials said.Soldiers moved from house to house in some areas of Jerusalem to check on residents. Highways in and out of Jerusalem remained closed to private cars and residents were advised to stay off the roads. The only way out of Jerusalem on Saturday was by train.Sietvanit Tzirnishki had boarded the train headed from Jerusalem to snow-free Tel Aviv, Israel's coastal metropolis.I've been stuck here in Jerusalem for two days at my sister's apartment that did not have electricity, she said. We have been going from one apartment to the other to get some heat and some food and I'm glad to get back to Tel Aviv now.Schools in Jerusalem and the West Bank were to remain closed Sunday, the start of the work week in the region.

Kerry in Vietnam on first visit as top US diplomat

Posted:

HO CHI MINH CITY (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday attended mass at a cathedral in Vietnam, where he served during the war, in a trip aimed at shoring up Southeast Asian ties amid myriad regional tensions.Kerry, a practicing Catholic whose experiences during the Vietnam War inspired his political activism, visited the French-colonial era Notre Dame Cathedral in southern Ho Chi Minh City as he began his first official visit to the nation as the top US diplomat.Washington is eager to underscore its commitment to Asia after its pivot policy was shaken earlier this year when the US government shutdown forced President Barak Obama to cancel a trip to the region, allowing China to occupy centre stage at key regional summits. The region is beset by political and territorial tensions, including bitter maritime disputes between an increasingly assertive Beijing and a number of its neighbours -- among them Vietnam -- that have raised concerns a minor incident in contested waters could escalate rapidly.Kerry is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh in Hanoi as part of his three-day visit, and is expected to highlight growing security and trade ties between Washington and Hanoi, which normalised relations two decades ago.He is also due to visit to the Mekong Delta where he was a wartime Swift Boat skipper on the dangerous gunboat missions patrolling the rivers in the area.Kerry served with the US Navy from 1966 to 1970 as a naval lieutenant. He was decorated with three Purple Hearts, awarded for any injury received during combat which requires medical treatment, a Bronze star and a Silver star.It was on his return after two tours of duty that Kerry became a fierce campaigner against the war, which ended in 1975.Kerry, who celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday, has voiced excitement over his trip, saying he has not gone to Vietnam since he joined president Bill Clinton on his landmark visit in 2000.Washington has sought to bolster its footprint in Asia as part of efforts to balance the growing might of China in the region. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei all have their own disputes with China over territory in the South China Sea, while Beijing has also locked horns with Tokyo over areas in the East Sea.Kerry's trip will also include a visit to the Philippines, a longstanding US ally, where he will tour the devastated city of Tacloban which was hit by a typhoon last month, as well as meeting Filipino leaders in Manila. It is a chance to tighten the slack left by Obama's absence at the APEC forum in Bali this year, said Jonathan London of the Department of Asian and International Studies at City University of Hong Kong.Kerry's visit is an opportunity for (Vietnam and the US) to more clearly define ways forward in the context of an East Asian diplomatic scene that has been destabilised by China's increasing aggressive regional posture, he told AFP.US lawmakers and New York-based Human Rights Watch have urged Kerry to press authoritarian Vietnam on human rights, saying he should link progress its participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership -- a vast trade agreement currently under negotiation.Kerry's cathedral visit comes as Vietnam has faced criticised for harassing and jailing Catholic activists, but US officials have recently hailed improvements in freedom of religion in the one-party state.

McCain meets opposition leaders in Ukraine

KIEV (AFP) - Outspoken United States Senator John McCain met Ukraine opposition leaders including former heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko in the capital Kiev on Saturday ahead of a mass rally.McCain met Klitschko, the head of the UDAR party, as well as nationalist leader Oleg Tyagnybok and the leader of the party of jailed Yulia Tymoshenko, Arseniy Yatsenyuk.McCain, the 2008 Republican nominee who lost the White House race to Barack Obama, wrote on Twitter that they had a good conversation and dinner.Tymoshenko's party hinted that McCain would speak at a major opposition rally in Kiev on Sunday, writing in a statement that it would feature foreign guests, particularly American senators.Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who chairs the Senate's Europe subcommittee, accompanied McCain to Ukraine.McCain later viewed the central Independence Square where opposition supporters have set up camps and built barricades.Posting a photograph of tens of thousands filling the square Saturday evening for a concert dedicated to the protest movement by Ukrainian rock band Okean Elzy, McCain called it an incredible show of patriotism. The US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, later posted on Twitter a picture of McCain meeting the band's lead singer, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, who was one of the symbols of the 2004 Orange Revolution.McCain has strongly condemned the Ukrainian government over its handling of protests against President Viktor Yanukovych's rejection of a broad trade deal with the European Union in pursuit of closer ties with Russia. He criticised the Ukrainian authorities for using force after heavy-handed riot police attempted to disperse protesters on Independence Square on Wednesday. It is appalling that Ukrainian authorities have chosen to use violence and oppression against peaceful demonstrators, he said in a statement. The United States has made its solidarity with Ukraine's opposition clear, even threatening sanctions after Wednesday's failed police raid on protesters.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday accused Western countries of losing their sense of reality over Ukraine's crisis and using blackmail to cut the country off from Russia.
