We have a clear view of where growth will come from over the coming years. While there will be significant growth opportunities in the UK, we see many more internationally. Barclays will become a leading global universal bank. Though proud of our heritage, we’re no longer just a British bank. The acquisition of a controlling stake in Absa, the development of Global Retail and Commercial Banking, and the continued rapid growth of Investment Banking and Investment Management are all designed to enable us to grow faster. In 2000, just 20% of profit before tax came from outside the UK. In 2006, around 50% came from outside the UK. Whether it is supporting the Global Retail and Commercial Banking or Investment Banking and Investment Management businesses, the Barclays Group has office locations all over the world. We have a large international presence across Europe, the USA, Africa and Asia where our 135,000 employees move, lend, invest and protect money for more than 30 million customers and clients worldwide. We have a clear view of where growth will come from over the coming years. While there will be significant growth opportunities in the UK, we see many more internationally. 2006, for example, was a record year for Barclays with profit before tax standing at £7.136 billion; up 35 per cent on 2005. Around half of our 2006 profit came from outside the UK.
