Objectives

The overall objective of EPI is reduction in morbidity and mortality among children causing due to 8 target diseases by offering vaccination services. Specific objectives/target of the programme are as under.

General Objectives

Reduction of mortality and morbidity resulting from EPI target diseases (Poliomyelitis, Tetanus, Measles, Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Pertusis, Hepatitis-B and Hib) by immunizing children under one year and pregnant women.

Specific objectives and targets

• Stop indigenous poliovirus transmission.
• Elimination of Neo-Natal Tetanus, by the year 2010.
• Reduction in Measles mortality by 95 % and Measles morbidity by 90% by 2011.
• Reduction of Diphtheria, Purtussis, Hepatitis B, and Childhood Tuberculosis to a minimum level.
• Control of other diseases by introducing new vaccines in EPI.
