ISLAMABAD: Motorway Sector N5 Commander Farooq Azam met with Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ICCI) President Zafar Bakhtwari in the ICCI chamber house, to discuss the efforts made by the Motorway Police to reduce the number of accidents.

Farooq Azam said that the Motorway Police was vigorously trying to reduce the rate of accidents by maintaining better discipline on the roads, through briefing, road safety awareness campaigns and constructive enforcement.

The sector commander said in the meeting that special refresher courses were being designed for professional drivers, so that their status in the society could be enhanced and they could realise their responsibilities.

He also said that training schools for drivers should be encouraged so that better discipline can be maintained on the roads.

Farooq Azam added that awareness of road safety among commercial vehicle drivers and other motorists was necessary. He also said that many accidents could be avoided if motorists drove vehicles carefully and followed traffic rules.

“Dozing at the wheel is a major reason for deadly accidents on highways and motorways,” he added.

He further said that most of the vehicles on the roads were not fit for driving and that the existing system of checking vehicle fitness needed to be improved.

Farooq Azam appreciated the important role of private sector in the development of the economy and said that the chambers could play a major role in the economic transformation of the country.
